13.Discovery
In a vacation,my brother and I decided to go off for a long walk while we were staying in the countryside. On the top of a mountain,a sudden(1)        began to fall and the temperature dropped a lot.It became so dark that we couldn't see the path clearly.
It was difficult for my brother and me to(2)        over rocks in the heavy rain. As I paused(停)under a tree, I noticed a cave between two huge rocks. I suggested to make a fire and warm ourselves in the cave.So my brother and I picked up some wood that was still (3)        and carried it back to the cave. I lit the fire with matches in my pocket. We sat down and ate our sandwiches around it.
In the cave, the flames (4)        light onto its ceiling.“Funny,”said my brother, “You can see shapes on the rock. One of them looks a bit like a deer. There is its head and there are its feet. It almost looks as if someone has(5)        it.”I took a burning branch(树枝)and went to examine the rock. Now I could see a shape of a smaller deer. Then we went further into the cave. In front of us was a wall of (6)        . There were birds, too, with the eyes carved(雕刻)out of the rock and painted white. We could see a snake, a bear, a wolf, but no people.
At that night, my brother and I were so(7)        that we did not get to sleep until very late. We talked and wondered about the people who had lived here before. Neither of us realized that these carvings and paintings (8)        back 15,000 years, nor that the title in the newspaper would be“The Find of the Century﹣Children Aged 13 and 11 Discover Cave Paintings.”
14. Attitude towards Space Trip
Do you want to spend a 10-day visit at the International Space Station? We have interviewed teenagers from around the world. They have different opinions about space trip.
Simon from England"There are so many beautiful places to see on the earth. I'd like to visit these places first before spending lots of money going into space. I think it should be cheap enough for everyone to go not just the rich and famous."
Ben from Canada"I think space travel is really bad for the space environment. We are sending more objects into space. When two objects in space crash, they break into smaller pieces and become space junk floating around. It's very dangerous for the tourists to travel in spaceship!"
Maria from Germany"Whether you like it or not, space trip is going to be an important thing in the future. It's a great idea to travel in space. I hope in 50 years' time that taking a holiday in space will be common. I'd really love to do it."
Yoko from Japan"Why do we want to travel into space? I'd rather go on holiday and stay in a hotel. It must be very boring to sit for hours in that small space shuttle (舱). I'd like to take a plane and go to another place on the earth."
15. Sophie's World
Several days went by without any word from the philosophy (哲学) teacher. Tomorrow was Thursday, May 17-Norway's National Day. School would be closed on the 18th as well. As they walked home after school, Joanna suddenly said, "Let's go camping! "
Sophie's immediate reaction (反应) was that she couldn't be away from the house for long. But then she said, "Sure, why not?"
A couple of hours later, Joanna arrived at Sophie's door with a large backpack. Sophie had packed hers as well, and she also had a tent.
When Sophie's mother got home around five o'clock, she gave them a sermon (指导) about what they must and must not do. She also insisted on knowing where they were going to set up camp.
They told her they planned to head for Grouse Top. They might be lucky enough to hear the mating call of the grouse (松鸡) next morning.
Sophie had a secret motive (动机) for choosing that particular spot. She thought that Grouse Top must be pretty close to the major's cabin (少校的木屋). Something was driving her to return to it, but she didn't dare to go alone.
The two girls walked down the path that led from the little cul-de-sac(street open at one end only)just beyond Sophie's garden gate. They chatted about this and that, and Sophie enjoyed taking a little time off from everything having to do with philosophy.
By eight o'clock they had set up their tent in the open air by Grouse Top. They had prepared themselves for the night. When they had eaten their sandwiches, Sophie asked, "Have you ever heard of the major's cabin?"
"The major's cabin?
"There is a but in the woods somewhere near here. . . by a little lake. A strange man lived there once, a major."
"Does anyone live there now?"
"Do you want to go and see?"
Joanna was not full of interest, but in the end they set out. The sun was low in the sky.
16. Some Amazing Apps for Your Smartphone
It's hard to imagine life in modern society without smartphones. Here are a few free and helpful apps that you can download to help you throughout the day.
If you have a habit of forgetting things and want to organize your life, give Evernote a try. It promises to help users remember everything. With a few clicks, you can send all of your photos, documents, and audio notes to your Evernote. Then your digital information can be stored in folders or tagged (标签) with useful keywords. When you need to access(进入)this data, you can perform a simple search and it will appear in seconds. Evernote can be used on smartphones, iPads, and computers, so you can access your data from everywhere.
Imagine you're watching a TV show and you hear a cool song in the background. You want to buy it but there's one problem: You don't know the name of the song. SoundHound is an app that will make this problem a thing of the past. It can make us quickly identify (辨别) songs. The app takes the song playing and compares it to thousands of other songs. Within seconds, it can tell you the name, artist, and album of the song you just heard.
Another wonderful app is Lookout. Hopefully you won't have to use it often, but when you do need it, Lookout can be a lifesaver. Its main function (功能) is to help you find your phone if it goes missing. Lookout does this by using your smartphone's data connection to locate (定位) your lost device. To see where your phone is on a map, simply log into Lookout from any web browser (浏览器). In the worst-case situation, if someone steals your phone, you can delete all of its data with a few clicks. This will be sure that no one will see any private information on your phone.
We've covered a few helpful apps but this is just the tip of an iceberg(冰山). If you do some searching online, you're certain to find lots of other apps that will make your life more convenient.
17.Cooking shows on TV are usually all about exotic(外来的)foods. Thanks to globalization, people everywhere are introducing their taste foods to dishes from every corner of the world. At the same time, other people are discovering that food from their areas is the best kept secret. In the past few years, this movement(运动)of buying local produce keeps because it offers a lot of benefits.
For starters, local food is often tastier because it is fresher. Goods that are imported(进口)from abroad must be grown or shipped from far away, so they naturally lose some of their freshness during the journey. A simple way to test this is to compare a banana from overseas with one that was grown locally and taste. Imported goods must also be washed and packaged in plastic or other containers so they can be stored well during the journey. These materials may cause the nutritional value of these goods to decline(下降)during the shipping process. Food safety is another reason why people are choosing local produce. Today's laws on foods are different from country to country. This causes confusion and makes it difficult to check if any harmful pesticides(农药)were used. When you know the local farmer who grows your food and the fields that are used to produce it, the chances of being polluted are greatly reduced.
Buying local foods can also have a beneficial influence on the environment.By supporting local growers , consumers(消费者)can keep green space and farmland in their communities in good condition.Buying local also helps to build the local community. If farmers can sell directly to consumers instead of middlemen, they will earn more money for their families. Additional profits(利润)also make farmers care for their soil and keep quality standards high. In the end, it's a win﹣win situation for both parties.
If you are interested in increasing more local foods into your diet, you can start by attending a farmers' market in your area. This is an open market where farmers sell fruits, vegetables, and meat directly to the public. If you have any questions about the production process or quality of these goods, you can ask the farmers directly. Once you experience the freshness of local foods for yourself, it might be difficult to go back to the supermarket.
18. Clean, Convenient, and Cheap
Traffic is the main cause of air pollution and noise in big cities. For example, drivers in New York are famous for honking (鸣) their horns and shouting. That noise drives many visitors and the local people crazy. Other big cities have similar problems with their traffic.
City governments have a lot of pressure to solve these problems. The most common solution is public transportation. New York's biggest form of public transportation is the subway. Another solution is bicycle sharing. This is a system that provides cheap bicycles. In cities that have bicycle sharing programs, there are lots of spots that have parked public bikes. People borrow the bikes and use them. They can return the bike at the same spot where they borrow it, or they can drop it off at another spot.
Bicycle sharing programs are different in each city. In some cities, the bikes are completely free. They aren't even locked. In other cities, you have to pay a small deposit (押金). You get the deposit back when you return the bike. In still other cities, you need to have a membership with the bicycle sharing program. Once you have a membership, you can use a bike at any time you want.
Bicycle sharing is hugely popular all over the world. There are bicycle sharing systems in dozens of countries and hundreds of cities. In total, there are more than 530 bicycle sharing systems around the world, and that number is going up all the time.
People love this system. It can be great for connecting to other modes of transportation. It's quick to grab a bike when you need one and convenient to drop it off at any station. Bikeshare can also save a lot of money. The annual membership includes unlimited trips under 30 minutes. Whether you're using bikeshare to go to work or ride to meet friends, we bet you'll get there with a smile on your face. Getting places by pedal power gets great exercise. Even biking short distances can have positive effects on your health and stress level. Biking saves fuel, prevents carbon emissions (排放) and keeps pollutants out of the air. It's not only healthy for you, but also for the environment.
