13. In 1918, a doctor and his pet dog walked with a soldier who was blind. They were outside a German hospital. The doctor had to go in the building for a short time. The soldier and dog waited outside. When the doctor came out, the soldier and the dog weren't there.
The doctor looked all around. He found them on the other side of the hospital yard. The doctor saw that his pet had Jed the soldier there safely. He thought a trained dog might be able to do more, so he taught a dog to lead a person. It worked out well. The German government helped start a program to teach dogs to be guides, Dorothy Eustis went to Germany to find out about the guide dog course. When she came back to the United States, she wrote about it for a magazine. Soon more people knew of the guide dogs.
The best dogs for the job are smart and fit. They behave well and make good choices. It takes more than two years to train a puppy to be a guide dog. When the dog is 14 months old, it learn many orders. It learns to know right and left. It learns to cross a busy street, or not to cross if that puts its owner in danger. A dog is trained for months. Then the owner and the dog meet, and they practice for four weeks.
The first US school for guide dogs opened in 1929. Now there are many schools, and there are more than 6,000 people with guide dogs.
14. Some people think that they have an answer to the problems of traffic and pollution in large cities. Their answer is the bicycle, or bike.
In a great many cities. hundreds of people ride bicycles to work every day. In New York City, some bike riders have even formed a group called "Bike for a Better City". They claim that if more people rode bicycles to work there would be fewer automobiles in the downtown section (市区) of the city and therefore less dirty air from car engines (引擎).
For several years this group has been trying to get city government to help bicycle riders. For example, they want the city to paint special lanes (车道)— for bicycles only — on some of the main streets, because when bicycle riders must use the same lanes as cars, there may be more accidents. "Bike for a Better City" feels that if there were special lanes, more people would use bikes.
But no bicycle lanes have been painted yet. Not everyone thinks it is a good idea. Taxi drivers don't like the idea —they say it will slow traffic Some store owners on the main streets don't like the idea — they say that there is less traffic, they will have less business. And most people live too far from downtown to travel by bike.
The city government has not yet decided what to do. It wants to keep everyone happy. On weekends, Central Park — the largest open place in New York — is closed to cars, and the roads may be used by bicycles only. But"Bike for a Better City" says that this is not enough and keeps fighting to get bicycle lanes downtown. Until that happens, the safest place to bicycle may be in the park.
15. Ask someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will almost mention recycling (回收), which is the process (过程) of treating used things, such as paper or steel (铁) so that they can be used again. Recycling in the home is very important of course. However, being forced to recycle often means we already have more things than we need. We are now dealing with the results of that over-consumption in the possible greenest way, but it would be far better if we did not bring so many things home in the first place.
Here is an example. In the UK, the total of packaging (包装) increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005. It now makes up a third of a household's waste. In many supermarkets, foods are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard.
Too much packaging causes serious environmental problems. The UK is running out of different kinds of ways for dealing with this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases (温室气体) which go on to cause the greenhouse effect. Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. The best way of avoiding this problem is to stop producing such unnecessary things in the first place. Food waste is another serious problem, too. Too many supermarkets encourage customers (消费者) to buy more than they need. They seldom encourage customers to reuse their plastic bags, for example. However, a few of them are coming round to the idea that this cannot continue.
But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us. We have learned to connect packaging with quality (质量). We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality. Is it true for all the products? In fact, more and more companies realized the importance of protecting the environment. They try to package what really should be packaged, including products in good quality.
As more of us recycle, we are beginning to realize how many unnecessary things are being collected. We need to face the waste of our daily life. Although many people have taken action to recycle, we have a high mountain to climb.
16. When we say someone is in a blue mood, it means he or she is unhappy or sad. It's important for everyone to be happy. Here are some fast and easy ways to cheer you up.
  Exercise
When you exercise, your brain gives out a chemical called Endorphin (内啡肽). This chemical makes you feel happy. That is why exercise is good for you.
  Have a talk
If something or somebody is troubling you, don't quarrel with other people to relax yourself. It is a good idea to have a heart-to-heart talk with a friend or a family member. Tell them your feelings. A chat is a useful way to make you feel better.
  Have some hobbies
For example, playing pop music, drawing something or listening to your favorite music will make you smile. Act like an artist. Draw, paint or make something. Being active and creative makes you feel more satisfied and less nervous.
  Laugh more
Laughing is the best way to improve your moods. Children laugh about 400 times a day. Adults only laugh about 20 times a day. What happens?Experts say if we laugh more, we will be happier and healthier.
  Think positively
Close your eyes and imagine a beautiful scene or a time. Never think about anything terrible that you can't change. What's more, leave your flat and go outside. Sun and fresh air are good for you. Be a kid for a day. Play games, watch comedy movies or read jokes online.
