Doing volunteer work is good for others, and it's good for you, too. My friend Mark (1)       it "a win-win (双赢的) situation". He says, "You feel good because you are helping others, and others feel good because they are getting help." That's (2)       he does volunteer work every summer holiday. Of course that is not the only benefit (好处) you can get (3)       being a volunteer. Let's learn more about the reasons to volunteer.
  Get life experiences and skills
When doing the volunteer work, you can learn more about the real world, and you can practice your skills at the (4)       time. For example, as a new college student, Gregory (5)       his summer holiday volunteering at a hospital. He chose a hospital in Chinatown, (6)       he could practice his language skills. He also found time to ask the (7)       questions and learned a lot from them about how to keep healthy.
  Meet interesting people
Both the people you are (8)       and the people you are working with can give you new ideas. They may give you interesting information and show you new (9)       of looking at the world.
  Make a difference
Doing even (10)       things can make a big difference to others. So let's work together to make a better world!
12. Anna Gomez is a successful TV hostess (女主持人), but most people still think of her as a famous skater. "As a child, my dream was to become a dancer. I didn't know any skates until I was nine, and didn't become really interested in skating until I was fourteen," said Anna. Anna went to university at the age of 18. Although she spent a long time skating every day, she did well in her lessons. "My parents supported (资助) me through university, and expected me to do well in skating," she said.
In a sport where most stars become famous as teenagers, Anna was unusual. "When I was young, I sometimes got angry at competitions and shouted at judges (裁判员) if I disagreed with them. That made me unpopular, especially with other skaters. I played as well as them, but I didn't believe in myself. The problem was in my head—I just didn't think I could be the winner. It changed as I won more competitions, and I was at my best by the age of twenty-five," said Anna.
Anna retired (退役) from skating five years later. "It was a difficult decision. People always asked me when I was going to stop. But I wasn't sure if I was ready to give up. Now, looking back, I'm glad I stopped when I did. You shouldn't think too much about the past—just move on to the next thing," said Anna.
13. Do teenagers in small villages do chores at home? How about the teenagers in big cities? Here is a survey. We asked 4,000 teenagers in China several questions. Half of them come from big cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. The others are from small villages. We made a diagram (图表) of the result of our survey.
Let's have a look at it. We found out that teenagers from small villages do more chores than those from big cities. Maybe it is because they live a harder life. Our advice to parents in big cities is that parents should give their children some chores to do. Doing chores teaches teenagers to take care of themselves.
Chores 2,000 teenagers in small villages 2,000 teenagers in big cities
Take out the rubbish 1,600 1,000
Sweep the floor 1,200 850
Make the bed 1,400 750
Do the dishes 1,100 600
Fold the clothes 900 1,500
14. Life is like a train ride. We get on. We ride. We get off. We get back on and ride some more. There are accidents and there are delays (延误). At certain stops, there are surprises. Some of these will change into great moments of joy; some will result in bad results.
When we are born, we first get on the train. We meet people who we think will be with us for the whole journey. Those people are our parents. Sadly, this is far from the truth. Our parents are with us when we completely need them. They also, have journeys they must complete. We live on with the memories of their love, support and so on.
There are others who get on the train and who finally become very important to us. These people are our brothers, sisters and friends, whom we will learn to love and take care of.
Some people regard their journey as a pleasant tour. They will just go happily along. Others will encounter many upsets, tears and losses (失落) on their journey. Some others will stay on to offer a helping hand to anyone in need.
Some people on the train will leave a deep impression (印象) when they get off. Some will get on and get off the train so quickly that they will hardly leave a sign.
We will sometimes be upset that some passengers, whom we love, will choose to sit in another compartment (车厢) and leave us to travel on our own. Then again, there's nothing that says we can't look for them anyway. But when we find them, we may not even be able to sit next to them because that seat will already be taken.
That's okay...everyone's journey will be filled with hopes, dreams, challenges, difficulties and goodbyes.
15. Jan Mela isn't like most kids. Two years ago, he lost an arm and a leg. But that didn't stop him. On Saturday, the 15-year-old boy from Poland (波兰) walked to the North Pole (北极). "I can do it, and other people can do great things, too." Mela said before he went there. How did Mela make it? Here are the details (细节) for Mela's success.
Polish newspapers said Mela was the youngest person and the first handicapped (残疾的) person to walk to the North Pole. How did Mela lose an arm and a leg? He had an electrical (电的) accident. Now, he walks with the help of a man-made leg of 62,000 yuan.
After the accident, Mela felt sad for himself. But he didn't lose hope. One day, he met Marek Kaminski, a Polish explorer. Eight years ago, Kaminski went to the North Pole and the South Pole in the same year. Mela wanted to see the North Pole, too. So Mela asked Kaminski if they could go together next time. Kaminski said yes.
It took Mela 21 days to get to the North Pole. The last three or four days were really hard because of the bad weather. But Mela kept going.
"I didn't think we would make it," he said. "but things got better later."
