12.Sunday Sep. 6, 2020 sunny
As the saying goes, "Helping others is helping ourselves." Everyone needs help some time in life.
Today our head teacher Ms. Li led us to do some volunteer work in our school. She also led us to the City Park and the Children's Hospital. It was my first time to be a volunteer. I was shy at first. Little by little, I became excited about helping others. I cleaned the benches and picked up litter in the City Park. At that time, I found people smiling at me. In the Children's Hospital, I told some stories and jokes which made the children feel happy. At the end of the day, I felt quite tired but happy. If I have a chance to be a volunteer after I graduate from college, I would like to go to the countryside to teach children. I hope that I could do something for them.
Volunteering is a great job. It can not only help others but also bring us happiness and improve ourselves. Although it may be a small thing, it can also make a great difference to the world. So take action and be helpful.
13. Are you afraid of COVID-19? How to fight against COVID-19? We choose some books to help you. The books were translated into 13 languages, including Japanese, French and Russian. They are convenient for readers to enjoy.
Virus, Virus, You Cannot Scare Me! (Writer: Mu Xiangzhen)
The book makes parents and children be able to learn in a fun way — about how viruses(病毒) spread and what people can do to protect themselves. It tells children not to fear about viruses. Besides, it also introduces the idea of getting well with nature, and hopes children can protect wild life and the natural environment.
A Special Spring Festival (Writer: Guo Jing)
This book pictures children's special Spring Festival in China during the outbreak of COVID-19. It tells a story of a common family in China. It tries to answer the child's question, "Why can't I be allowed to play outside?" It tells the child what COVID-19 is, how it spreads, and how we can protect ourselves from it. The pictures show love between family members, friends and everyone.
Ten Tips to Fight Monsters (Writer: Dong Ruihan)
Dad leaves 10 tips to help us fight the virus. Who will win the war? The story will gently teach children how to prevent the disease in a language that they can easily understand. It will help kids remain calm in the hard time, and encourage them to help family members to prevent the disease.
A Brief History of Viruses for Children (Writer: Changsha White- flag Dolphin Children's Book Workshop)
This storybook tells the beginning of the virus, so the readers can understand the history of the virus easily. The book sets up a "Ten Questions about COVID-19" section, which explains the knowledge of COVID-19 (including how it spreads), helping children readers to understand the virus basing on reason and science.
14. My husband Ben and I were hanging out on the street one evening. I was talking but he was looking over at someone.
He walked over to a young girl who was crying. As he talked to her, I could see from his body language that he was trying to calm her down. When I joined them, I realized that she had been homeless for some time. She told Ben that all she wanted was to go to her sister's house in another city.
Some people would have handed her some money, offered her lunch or maybe allowed her to make a call. Ben did much more. He said, "Kelly, I can't leave her here like this. Sometimes people need someone not only to help them but to believe they're telling the truth."
It was a bit cold, so we had an idea to take her home. When I asked her if she'd like to go home with us, she thanked me about a million times with tears in her eyes.
We went home and I gave her some clean clothes to wear and told her she could use the shower. We ate something. Finally, she told us her story.
In the morning, she was finally able to get a hold of her sister, so she had a place to go. Ben drove her to the bus station and bought her a ticket.
Sometimes what people need is not just money, but people who will trust, listen to and understand them.
15. Life is competitive — some kids can do something faster or better than other kids. This might not seem fair, but all people are different and how well you can do something is different to others. This means there are winners and losers, and lots of people are neither winners nor losers but in-between. You can choose to be a good winner or an even better loser whether you are competing against others or yourself.
  Being a good winner
No one likes a "show off".
No one likes someone who takes all the praise for the efforts of a team.
No one likes people who put others down to make themselves look good.
To be a good winner you need to:
◆Be modest (谦虚的).
◆Thank those who helped you for their efforts.
◆Keep trying to improve yourselves.
◆Aim for the next step up in whatever you are doing well.
  Being an even better loser
Of course it's disappointing to lose, especially if you are close to winning. Behaving badly or angrily, name-calling and going on about things being "unfair" won't change the final result and will only make you look like a bad sport. And no one likes bad sports either.
To be an even better loser you need to:
◆Behave politely, nicely and kindly.
◆Congratulate the other team.
◆Keep any negative (消极的) thoughts to yourself — at least until you are away from the game.
It's OK to let out your negative thoughts to your best friend or parents later. And if you don't do very well in a game, try harder to learn for the next one. Improving yourself makes you a winner too.
16. We all need to learn to listen well. Listening is a skill we should be practicing every day. And I mean active listening, not just listening when it is convenient for us. Listening to others shows them that they are important. It's a sign of respect. If someone listens to you carefully when you are talking, it shows that they are really interested in what you are saying. How do you practice listening? Here are some basic rules.
Put down whatever is in your hands. Are you in the middle of writing something? You are supposed to put down the pen and fold your hands. Are you reading something? Close it so that it will be impossible for you to look down and start reading again, and then put it down.
Face the person you are speaking with. Facing the person you are speaking with will help you focus completely on listening. It will also make the person feel what he is saying is important.
Mind your body language. Standing closer to the speaker will show that you are interested. Crossing your arms in front of your chest (胸部) shows disagreement. Looking around the room shows you have no interest. Looking the speaker in the eye tells him that he is important.
Listen carefully and completely. Do not start sharing your ideas after just hearing the first few words. Do not just think about your reply in your mind. Pay attention to the speaker. Really listen to what he is expressing.

17. A few weeks ago, all the students were talking about the coming trip at the winter camp. For me, it was (1)             piece of terrible news. I was not good at winter sports, and everyone would laugh at me. I told my mother my worry. "You might be surprised, Alice," said Mom. "The only way to find out the (2)            (true) is to try bravely."
After arriving at the camp, we were (3)            (ask) to skate down to the field. I skated carefully, but I still fell down. Somebody started laughing at me (4)            (loud). Just when I didn't know (5)             to do, I noticed a girl in the same situation as me. Although she had fallen down many (6)            (time), she didn't give up trying. Encouraged by her spirit, I felt I was (7)            (brave) than ever. The next day, I (8)            (choose) to try skating first. And I succeeded in doing it at the (9)            (five) time.
Actually it's normal for (10)u             to worry about failures when we try something new. However, we should be confident and brave even though sometimes we have to fall on the road to success.
