3. Every boy wants to find treasure. And Tom was no different. One summer day, Tom told Huck about his idea.
"Where can we look for treasure?" asked Huck.
"It's hidden on islands, under dead trees, but mostly under the floors in haunted (闹鬼的) houses."
  "Who hides it?"
"Robbers (劫匪). You can find a box with a hundred dollars in it, or a chest full of diamonds (钻石)."
So, on Saturday afternoon, the boys went to look for treasure at the haunted house on Cardiff Hill. It was a quiet and lonely place. And the boys looked at each other in fear. They entered quietly, and explored downstairs. There were cobwebs (蜘蛛网) everywhere and everything was old and broken. Then they threw their tools in a corner and walked upstairs, but there was nothing there. They were just about to go downstairs and start digging when Tom stopped.
"What is it?" whispered Huck, going white with fear.
  "Keep still! There's someone downstairs!"
The boys lay down, looking through the holes in the wooden floor. There were two men downstairs. One was an old Spaniard (西班牙人) in a wide hat. The other was dirty and unpleasant-looking. The boys shook with fear.
Then the Spaniard spoke. It was Indian Joe. Tom and Huck felt even more frightened.
The men sat down on the floor and ate. They then lay down and fell asleep. When the two men woke up, the stranger said, "It's time for us to move, partner. What will we do with the ﹩650 from the robbery?"
"Let's keep $30 each and leave the rest here."
The dirty man went to the fireplace (壁炉) and moved a stone. Then he lifted out a bag full of money and took out some coins.
The two boys forgot all their fears. There was real treasure downstairs.
4. Almost everyone has dropped some food on the floor and still wanted to eat it. If someone saw you drop it, he or she might have shouted, " 5-second rule!" This so-called rule says food is OK to eat if you pick it up in five seconds or less. But is that true?
Professor Anthony Hilton from Ashton University, UK, tested the rule with his students. They wanted to prove that food dropped for five seconds is less likely to contain bacteria (细菌) than if it sits there for longer.
For the study, Hilton and his students tested a lot of foods, such as bread, pasta, cookies and candy, to see how much bacteria they had when they made contact with the floor. They allowed the food to lie on the different types of flooring, like carpet (地毯), laminate (复合地板) and tile (瓷砖), for three seconds to 30 seconds.
Not surprisingly, the longer the food was on the floor, the more bacteria it had. And the type of floor where the dropped food landed had an effect. Bacteria are least likely to transfer (转移) from carpet, while they are most likely to transfer laminate or tiled surface after more than five seconds.
The study also found that the wetter the food, the more likely it was to pick up bacteria. Although most people are happy to follow the 5-second rule, eating food dropped on the floor still carries an infection (感染) risk. "It also depends on which bacteria are on the floor at the time." Hilton told Forbes.

6. Plastic straws (吸管) may seem harmless, but they bring dangers to the environment. Because they're so small, they easily find their way into the ocean. There they can harm animals that try to eat them. They may be small, but the millions of plastic straws that are used and thrown away daily add up to a huge problem. What can you use instead of plastic straws?
  Bamboo straws
Fast-growing and plentiful, bamboo is ideal for making straws. Many companies now produce bamboo straws, often without the use of chemicals. Bamboo straws can be washed in a dishwasher or by hand and used again and again. When they do wear out, they break down easily.
  Glass straws
Glass straws can also be reused, and if they're clear, it's easy to see whether they're clean or not. They are available in different kinds of lengths, colours and widths, so consumers have many choices.
  Bottles that come with straws
Many water bottles come with buill-in straws. Although that straw may be made of plastic, you keep it and use it repeatedly. That means it probably won't end up in ocean any time soon. And it can be cheaper if you choose to fill the bottles with water rather than buying drinks.
  No straw
For many drinks, straws aren't required. People can drink straight out of a cup. And businesses can cut down on the number of straws they use simply by asking people if they want one. Many people seldom notice whether they have a straw or not. Plastic straws are far from the only way to enjoy our favourite drink. Giving them up is an easy way of helping take care of the planet.
7. One day, a student was taking a walk with a professor. As they went along, they saw a pair of old shoes lying in the path. They were a poor farmer's, (1)      . The student turned to the professor and said, "We will hide his shoes, then hide ourselves behind those trees, and wait to see what he will do. "
"My young friend, "answered the professor, "We should never make fun of the poor. Why not put a coin in each shoe, (2)      ?" The student did so and they both hid themselves behind the trees. The poor man soon finished his work, and came across the field to the path where he had left his coat and shoes.
While putting on his coat, he put his foot into one of his shoes, and felt something hard. Then he bent down to see what it was, and found the coin. Surprised, he picked up the coin, turned it around, (3)      . He then looked around but saw nobody. He put the money into his pocket, and continued to put on the other shoe. To his surprise, he found another coin.
He couldn't control his feelings and fell to his knees, looked up to the sky and expressed his thanks. Then he spoke of his wife, sick and helpless, (4)      . He said the help would save them from dying. The student stood there deeply moved, (5)      . "Now," said the professor, "Are you not much happier than if you had hidden the shoes'?"

A. and then we will hide ourselves and watch
B. and looked at it again and again
C. and his children without bread
D. who was working in the field nearby
E. and his eyes were filled with tears
8. Now cell phones can be seen everywhere. Many students have their own cell phones.
There are many advantages about using cell phones. They can listen to some music to relax. They can (1)s       their happiness with their friends on the Internet. What's more, they can buy all types of goods online (2)e       in a few minutes.
However, as an old says goes, a coin has two sides. Some students have (3)t       using their cell phones in the right way.
