14. As we know, dogs are good at running. However, have you ever seen a dog compete with many runners in a race? Such a funny event happened in America.
A dog finished the half marathon(马拉松) race and became famous on the Internet overnight. The dog called Ludivine lived near the race place with its owner. When it walked out, the dog joined in the race and ended up running the whole 13.1 miles.
April Hamlin is the dog's owner. She didn't know Ludivine joined in the race and became a pet star until a friend called to tell her about it.
The dog went to the starting line of the race and then started to run with the runners. At first, it ran with a few of the front runners and then ran away to taste some food on the roadside and play with water, and finally got back to the race. "I was proud that it finished the whole 13.1 miles," April Hamlin said.
Ludivine took the seventh place among 165 runners in about an hour and a half. Later it got a medal as a prize because of its spirit of sports.
The race was mainly for raising money for a high school. Ludivine must be glad that it could help the students in its hometown.
15. Everyone has got two personalities (性格) — the one that is shown to the world and the other that is secret and real. You don't show your secret personality when you're awake because you can control yourself, but when you're asleep, your sleeping position shows the real you. In a normal night, of course, you often change your sleeping positions. The important position that best shows your secret personality is the one that you go to sleep.
If you go to sleep on your back, you're a very open person. You normally trust people and you're easily influenced by new ideas. You don't like to make people unhappy, so you never express your real feelings. You're quite shy and you're not very confident.
If you sleep on your stomach, you're a person who likes to keep secrets. You worry a lot and you're always easily becoming sad. You never want to change your ideas, but you are satisfied with your life the way it is. You usually live for today not for tomorrow.
If you sleep curled up (蜷缩), you're probably a very nervous people. You have a low opinion of yourself and often protect yourself from being hurt, so you're defensive. You're shy and you don't usually like meeting people. You like to be on your own.
If you sleep on your side, you have usually got a very well-balanced personality. You know your strengths and weaknesses. You're usually careful. You have a confident personality. You sometimes feel worried, but you don't often get sad. You always say what you think, even if it makes people angry.
16.Social Media, Friends or Enemies?
It's no surprise that the pressure to stay on social media is a real challenge for today's teenagers. They spend too much time using QQ, WeChat and other social media. For many teens, social media can become almost addictive. Some teenagers can't even live a normal life without social media.
According to a study, people who used more than seven social media platforms had more than three times the risk of depression (抑郁症) than people who used two or fewer. Children who overuse social media are likely to show less interest in social activities and experience an increase in loneliness.
Teens often feel emotionally invested (情感投入) in their social media accounts. Not only do they feel pressure to answer quickly online, but they also feel pressure to have perfect photos and posts, which can cause a lot of worries. In fact, some studies have found that the larger a person's social circle online is, the more worried they will feel about keeping up with everything online.
A British study shows one-fifth of the teens have trouble sleeping at night because of social media use. They "almost always" wake up during the night and log in to social media. In addition to reporting feeling tired all the time, they also reported being less happy on average than teens whose sleep was not affected by social media. Besides, not having enough sleep can lower the immune (免疫的) system and make it more likely for a teen to get sick.
Overuse of social media can lead to jealousy (嫉妒) and envy among teenagers as well. People tend to post only the positive things that they experience, or make light of the bad with funny stories. As a result, another person's life may look perfect online, but offline they have struggles just like anyone else. It is easy for a teen to play the comparison(比较) game and start thinking that everyone is happier or better offline than he or she is.
Many teens spend so much time online checking messages that they forget to communicate with the people right in front of them. As a result, teens risk having poor relationships in their lives when social media takes center stage.
It is important that parents understand the possible influence that social media has on their kids. For this reason, it is important to set up guides for social media use among kids. It's also important for families to have regular discussions on how to use social media reasonably and safely. When families pay close attention to the teens' world of social media, their online world will become much more manageable.
17. Some people think only school children do not agree with their parents. However, it is not true. (1)      . If it's hard for you to communicate with your parents, don't worry about it. Here are some advice for you to bridge the generation gap (消除代沟).
Don't argue (争辩) with your parents. (2)      . Your parents probably won't consider your ideas if you are shouting at them. And you can't express yourself well if you are angry. Go someplace to cool off. Make sure you understand why you are unhappy. Then think about what you want to say to your parents. If you don't think you can speak to them at the moment, try writing a letter.
Try to reach a compromise (和解). (3)      . You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other. Michael's mother didn't agree with him about buying a motor-cycle. They argued over it. But they finally came to a compromise. Michael bought the motor-cycle, but only drove it on certain days. Of course, your parents might refuse to compromise on something. In these situations, it is especially important to show love and respect (尊敬) to them. (4)      .
Talk about your values. The values of your parents are probably different from those of your own. Tell your parents what you care about, and why. (5)      . A good relationship with your parents can make you a better and happier person. It is worth having a try!
