15. Many people are interested in taking selfies (自拍). However, can you imagine some animals also like this cool way of self-expression?
Two gorillas (大猩猩) and a park keeper can be clearly seen in a selfie. The gorillas are posing (摆姿势) like humans. They look so cool! In fact, the park keeper named Michael used to help save the two gorillas when they were very small. Ever since, they've lived at Virunga National Park. The park is the home to about 1, 000 mountain gorillas and tries to protect wildlife. The selfie became famous after being posted online by Michael. So far, it has been shared more than 20, 000 times.
In the selfie, these two gorillas appear to be natural in front of the camera. One stands proudly in a power pose with her feet wide apart, while the other stands back to make herself into the photo.
"The two girls are always funny, so this was the perfect photo of their true feelings," Virunga National Park wrote on the Internet.
The gorillas are used to thinking of the park keepers as their "parents". Since they were found, the park has been taking care of them and they've learned to copy what their "parents" usually do.
16. Many people read physical books (实体书) or e-books, but now there is a new direction-listening to audiobooks (有声读物).
According to a recent report by the Chinese Academy of Press and Publication (CAPP), more people are choosing to listen to audiobooks these days.
It is reported that about 562 million people in China listened to audobooks in 2020. More than 63% listeners are below 30. Young people have been the main driver in the development of audiobooks.
One of the reasons that audiobooks are becoming increasing popular is that people want to get more use out of their free time, China News Service reported Listening to e-books frees up time for them, whether they are at the gym, on a bus, or in the bed. Faster Internet speeds mean that a book can be downloaded (下载) in sounds, according to Wei Yushan, director of CAPP.
Listening to audiobooks also helps with loneliness When I feel bored or lonely, listening to audiobooks makes me feel that there is someone along with me: Zhong Yan, an office Worker who is obsessed with audiobooks, told the Beijing Evening News.
However, audiobooks are still far from perfect. Listening to audiobooks doesn't make you think in the way you do when you're reading a book. "I's also likely that you will miss information when you listen," said Zhong.
Wang Qiang, a primary student who often listens to audiobooks shares this point: "Although it's easy to use, audiobooks are less detailed (详细的) than physical books you read," he told the Beijing Evening News.
Li Yini, the manager of Baicaoyuan Bookstore in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, told Jiangnan Times that people who want a book with serious content (内容) should choose a paper book or e0book, but they can choose an audiobook if the content is easy to understand.
17. "If you could have any three things, what would you want?"
Eleven-year-old Ruby Chitsey loves asking that question, but it's not a game she plays. She asks the elderly at nursing homes (敬老院) in Arkansas where she lives. Even more amazing, she then sets out to make their wishes come true.
Ruby has long been close to the elders. Her mother has worked in nursing homes for many years. Ruby often stays with her in summer and asks the elderly if they need anything.
Once Ruby noticed an old lady named Pearl looking out a window. She seemed sad. "What are you looking at?" Ruby asked. Pearl said she was watching her dog being led away by his new owner. Ruby asked around and discovered that the nursing home didn't allow the elderly to have dogs and Pearl couldn't afford to pay anyone to look after her dog, Ruby also heard many stories about Pearl's friends there and found that they were unable to afford life costs. That was when she decided to do something about it.
She started by asking the elderly what three things they wanted most in the world. Her mother worried that people would ask for cars and other things that an 11-year-old wouldn't be able to provide. Instead, they asked for chocolate, fries, and even just trousers that fit properly.
"The wishes were simple," her mother says. "We left the nursing home that day and went straight to a store and bought as many things as we could."
Using their own money, Ruby and her mother helped about 100 people in three months. Then, the good people in Arkansas strongly supported them, so Ruby and her mother set up a GoFundMe page 一 Three Wishes for Ruby's Residents. After GoFundMe named Ruby a Kid Hero and spread her story internationally, Three Wishes raised more than $ 250, 000 in five months. One of Ruby's new goals is to set up a shared computer in one nursing home in each state.
Ruby doesn't plan to stop there. "I consider kindness to be my hobby," she says, "and I'm very good at it."
18. When I first arrived in Australia, I was completely excited about everything. But very soon culture shock (文化冲击) came. May people mistake it as the stage of feeling discomfort, unhappiness and homesickness. However, culture shock is more than that!
The Honey moon Stage (蜜月期)
The so-called "honeymoon stage" means those first weeks or months when you are super happy to be in another culture and everything you go through — from cultural differences such as ways of living to clothes, music, and food — seems so new and exciting.
The Hostile Stage (敌对期)
However, after about two months, differences became clearer. I started missing my friends and family more and more. I began to keep thinking like this:nobody really understands me. I wish people would just be able to speak Chinese for one day! Why is it so impossible to find Hot Pot from China?Feelings change from time to time, homesickness last night, excitement this morning.
The Adjustment Stage (适应期)
Over the next few months, then, came a special time. I learned to forget about my unhappiness, started to understand new ways of thinking and made many new friends. My English improved greatly 一 not only my vocabulary improved but also I thought and dreamed only in English!
The Acceptance Stage (文化融合期)
Things started to change and I understood Australian culture better and better! Every day I felt more and more comfortable with my new home. My happiest moment was when my dear friend one day said, "You are Australian now, Jude! You sound just like us!" She saw me turn from a quiet shy Chinese to who I am now.
I want to point out that the influences of culture shock are different for everyone and can mean different acts and feelings. But one thing is for sure:culture shock is always there and understanding is the first step to fit you better for a foreign culture.
19. Last night one of my Chinese friends took me to a concert of Chinese traditional music. The piece which was played on the erhu especially moved me. The music was strangely beautiful, but under the beauty I sensed a strong sadness and pain. The piece had a simple name, Erquan Yingyue (Moon Reflected on Second Spring), but it was one of the most moving pieces of music that I've ever heard. The erhu sounded like it was crying, and I almost cried along with it as I listened. Later I looked up the history of Erquan Yingue and I began to understand the sadness in the music.
The music was written by Abing, a musician who was born in the city of Wuxi in 1893. His mother died when he was very young. Abing's father taught him to play many musical instruments, such as the drums, dizi and erhu, and by age 17, Abing was known for his musical ability. However, after his father died, he became blind because of a serious illness. For several years, he had no home. He lived on the streets and played music to make money. Even after Abing got married and had a home again, he continued to sing and play on the streets.
Abing's amazing musical skills made him very popular during his lifetime. By the end of his life, he could play over 600 pieces of music. Many of these were written by Abing himself. It is a pity that only six pieces of music were recorded for the future world to hear, but his popularity continues to this day.
Today, Abing's Erquan Yingyue has become one of China's national treasures. Its sad beauty makes people recall their deepest wounds from their own experiences.
