But I knew (2)       I really wanted to prove I could avoid television, I'd have to survive the darkest, coldest England months without it. This winter, I had my test.
A year ago I (3)       my own place. Living alone was an opportunity to choose (4)       I wanted to live. And being TV-free would allow me to do what I didn't have (5)       for. I wondered if I would feel bored without TV, but decided it would be better not to spend time with my "friends" on TV but to visit (6)       friends. I also considered (7)       a small TV to keep in the closet and bring out on special occasions.

13. Many people believe that toys are mainly made for kids. When we grow up, we should put away such childish things.
But now many grown-ups are getting them out again.
According to data from the market research firm NPD Group, toys bought by people over the age of 12 account for 23 percent of the European market. Among them, adults are still the main force. In 2019, Beijing's Toy Show attracted tens of thousands of visitors, including many grown-ups.
But why are adults interested in these seemingly "childish" things?
Toys can "bring back happy childhood memories", noted website SWNS Digital. Many adults are under a lot of pressure at home and at work. Items that they were familiar with in childhood can remind them of easier times.
Rob Willner, 25, is one such person who finds solace in items from the past. At his home in London, he keeps two boxes of loose childhood Lego tucked away under a bed, as well as various large "sentimental'' models on shelves in his house.
When he comes home after a hard day, he often plays with the toys. "It reminds me of the playful side of life, but also helps me to keep perspective. Lego isn't great, but it's fun, and helps you to think about what's really important," he told The Telegraph.
There is another reason for the rise in popularity of toys among adults. This pastime offers pressure-free creativity. Even hobbies such as baking and painting can be shadowed by the worry that the results will fail to please other people. Dressing up a doll or playing with a model train set doesn't come with a lot of pressure to please others.
It seems that adults are no longer taking their childhood freedom for granted. After all, just as UK artist David Hockney said, "Play is serious."
14. With labels such as "zero sugar, zero fat, zero calories'', diet drinks have been placed in places that are easily seen on supermarket shelves. But how do these drinks taste sweet without sugar?
One of China's most popular drink brands, Genki Forest, apologized on April 10 for deceptively advertising its products as having no sugar. In a statement, the fast-growing company said that the difference between "sugar-free" and "sucrose-free" was not well explained in the product advertising and packaging, leading to a "misunderstanding".
Now the company has changed the words from "sugar-free" to "low sugar" on the bottles. But many internet users don't buy the apology and feel like they've been tricked into gaining weight. The event has pushed "sugar-free" drinks to consumers' attention.
In fact, there are many kinds of sugar. Sucrose is just one of them. Other kinds of sugar, such as fructose and sugar alcohol, are still in Genki Forest drinks. These types of sugars are used as sweeteners. They offer little energy, but a small amount of them can make drinks taste sweet. That's why diet drinks like Genki Forest are popular among people who want to lose weight.
However, these sweeteners might make people eat more. When you eat sweet-tasting things, it sends your brain a "sweet signal", which then tells your body to prepare itself to "lake in energy. But because diet soft drinks have little energy, the brain will not receive what it is expecting. In this situation, you will feel hungry and start eating more food to get energy, according to Chen Wei, chief physician of Clinical Nutrition Department of Peking Union Medical College Hospital.
According to China Daily, drinking too many diet drinks might lead to obesity. "Compared with sugar-sweetened drinks, low-sugar drinks are helpful for preventing obesity, but compared with water, low-sugar drinks are not that healthy," Chen told The Paper.
15. Two men, Alan and Henry, both seriously ill, shared a hospital room. Alan was allowed to sit up in his bed and his bed was next to the room's only window. Henry had to spend all his time flat on his back.
The men talked for hours, of their wives, families, their homes and their jobs. And every afternoon when Alan, in the bed next to the window, could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Lovers walked arm in arm among flowers. Trees and skyline could be seen in the distance. As he described all these, Henry, on the other side of the room, would close his eyes and imagine the scene.
One warm afternoon Alan described a parade passing by. Although Henry could not hear the band, he could see it in his mind. Unexpectedly, an alien thought entered his head:Why should he have all the pleasure of seeing everything while I never get to sec anything? It doesn't seem fair. Henry felt ashamed at first. But as the days passed and he missed seeing beautiful sights, his envy grew and soon let him down. He began to find himself unable to sleep. He should be by that window and that thought now controlled his life.
Late one night, as he lay staring at the ceiling, Alan began to cough. He was choking. Henry watched in the dim room as the struggling man tried hard to reach for the button to call for help. Listening from across the room, he never moved, never pushed his own button which would have brought the nurse running. In less than five minutes, the coughing and choking stopped, along with the sound of breathing. Now, there was only silence-deathly silence.
As soon as it seemed appropriate, Henry asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the change and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone
Slowly, painfully, he struggled to take his first look. Finally, he would have the joy of seeing it all himself. He looked out, but faced a blank wall.
