17. After school on Friday, I waited at the school gate to walk home with Jemma, as usual. Then I saw (1) talking and laughing happily with some other girls. She glanced (瞥了一眼) at me and left me alone there. I knew that I (2) my best friend right then.
After dinner, Mom asked, "Is Jemma coming by tomorrow?" I shrugged (耸肩) and said nothing. The next morning, Mom asked, "Today is (3) , what are you and Jemma going to do?" I shrugged again. Mom looked at me in (4) , but she didn't go on asking. A few minutes later, Mom said, "Will you take the food to Grandma, please?" I (5) . When I walked down the street, a new girl in the neighborhood came towards me, smiling to me. But I said (6) and went past her. Grandma welcomed me at the door with a warm hug.
Sitting on the sofa, I noticed some old (7) of kids on the table. Grandma pointed at a girl (8) short black hair. "That's Beth Lambert, my friend." she said, "Beth and I used to be best friends at school. We did everything (9) . But one day, she made new friends and said she didn't want to hang out with me anymore. Nothing hurt me (10) that." I couldn't say anything because I knew I would start (11) if I opened my mouth.
Grandma hugged me again. "Simone, sometimes we may lose friends not because of ourselves. It might happen to anyone," she continued. "Then, see her?" Grandma's pointed to another photo. There was a girl with glasses (12) by Grandma's side. "She lived near me. I (13) her to play balls with me, and soon we became friends. "
"So if we want to start a new friendship," she said, "One smile is all it took."
When I was going (14) home, I saw the new girl again. I went over to her, (15) and said, "Hello."
