12. Telling the truth is a very good habit. Here is a story of a man who did lots of bad things, but his promise to tell the truth (1)       him.
One morning the man came to the prophet (先知) Muhammad and said, "Oh, prophet of Allah, I have many bad habits. Which one should I (2)       first?"
The prophet said, "(3)       telling lies first and always tell the truth." The man promised to do so.
He went home and thought about the prophet's advice all day. But at night he planned to go out to steal something. Before leaving home, he said to (4)       , "If tomorrow the prophet asks me where I have been, shall I say that I went out to steal? No, I can't say that. But (5)       can I tell a lie. If I tell the truth, everyone will call me a thief. " So the man decided not to steal that night.
Next day, when the man was about to drink (6)      , he thought, "What shall I say to the prophet (7)       he asks me what I did during the day? I (8)       not tell a lie, and if I tell the truth, people will hate me because a Muslim is not allowed to drink wine." So he gave up the idea of drinking wine. In this way, whenever the man thought of doing something bad, he (9)       remembered his promise to tell the truth. Step by step, he didn't do anything (10)      . He became a good Muslim and a very good person.

14. I was 11 years old standing outside in just my underwear while I watched the house that I grew up burning to the ground.
A few minutes earlier I was in bed when my grandma's scream (尖叫) woke me up. A fire had broken out her room and woke her. Hearing her, my older brother jumped into action, running from room to room quickly waking everyone in the house. The house, however, was over 50 years old and made of wood. Before we could do anything, the fire burned it out. Luckily, we all ran outside before the fire took hold of every room.
I stood there shivering (发抖). I watched helplessly while my mom cried and my dad sighed (叹气). I wondered what was going to happen to us now that we lost all of our things.
As I looked around, I realized something for the first time. The thing that matter aren't things. I saw my older brother running across the bridge near our house to get help. I saw my oldest brother who was on his walking stick standing unsteadily (不稳定地) on one leg. I saw my grandma and dad wrapped in each other's arms and my mom holding our little dog. I realized at that moment that we were all alive. Everything that was meaningful survived the fire. Our lives would continue. We would all be around to love each other for many years to come. And that was all that mattered.
I still think of that fire in the night. It helped me to become who I am today. It showed me for the very first time what is truly meaningful in this life. It helped me to learn that the love we share is far more important than the things we own.
Live your life for the things that matter, not for the things you own. Love others. Let the fire inside of you make this world a warmer place.
15. Parrots have been known to repeat words, but have you ever thought how they communicate? New research has found that wild parrots are actually given names by their parents.
According to a study led by Karl Berg of Cornell University in the US, nestlings (雏鸟) are given a special sound of their own, which stays with them through their lives. In the study, the team placed hidden cameras in the nests of 17 different wild parrots. After studying their sounds, the team found the differences in the calls parents used to communicate with each baby parrot. And the baby birds seemed to know the calls.
Sounds very similar to humans, doesn't it?
The study also proved (证明) that these different calls are made socially not genetically (基因上地). To do this, scientists switched the eggs in nine of the 17 nests, so that half of the parrots were raising nestlings that weren't theirs. Using the recordings, the scientists are sure that the nestlings all used names similar to those the parents (whether biological or non-biological) called them for the first weeks of their lives.
Lucie McNeil, from National Geographic, said, "this would be the first proven example of a non﹣human species teaching acoustical (声学的) communication."
Karl Berg told National Public Radio of the US, "Most people say all those calls are just noise, but I think they're having conversations."
Fox News also asked Berg what else the parrots might be saying. He replied, "They may decide where the food is or if they should go 3 km North-Northwest. These are sorts of arguing or discussing."
You never know, if the science of animal translation keeps developing, we might one day be watching a reality show about parrots.
16.阅读短文, 并按要求完成下列试题.
Americans love pets. Many pet owners treat their pets as a part of the family. They treat their pets as their children — sometimes even better.
In America, there are more families with pets than those with children. 43 percent of U. S. homes have pets. Some of the pets, such as monkeys, snakes, butterflies and even wolves, come from other countries, especially China, Thailand, South Africa and so on. More commonpets include fish, mice and birds. However, their favorites are cats and dogs. They sometimes have strong feelings about whether dogs or cats make better pets. "Dog people" and "cat people" often havefriendly arguments about that.
People can get many benefits (好处) from pets. Pets stay with people, make people happy and help people stay away from loneliness. Therefore, most of Americans like pets. They think pets should be treated well. At least 75 animal welfare (福利) organizations have been set up in America. They provide care and good services for homeless animals. Some pets can help people live a better life. For example, researchers have discovered that getting on with animals can help lower a person's blood pressure. Dogs can offer protection from strange visitors. Cats can play games with the children. Some kinds of pets can provide love for their owners. In fact, to keep a pet can help a young couple have the responsibility to raise children. Pets are as basic to U. S. culture as hot dogs or apple pies. To Americans, pets are not just property (财产), but a part of the family.
