2. Until I was 8, I spent every Sunday outside in the garden with Nana. The zucchini (西葫芦) plants quickly became my favorite. I would sit on the ground, looking at them quietly.
"Nana," I asked one day. "Should I take off all these little yellow flowers?"
"No, darling," she said gently. "Those flowers will turn into zucchini soon."
"Really?"
"You just wait. Soon you'll see that little things can turn into wonderful things. You should remember that."
Every Sunday I returned to the garden to check on the plants, and each time I saw more zucchini.
"Are there so many because I take good care of the plants?" I asked.
"Yes," Nana said. "When you look after things, good things will grow. You should remember that."
For months I returned every week to Nana's to see how my plants were doing, and each time I was proud to see more zucchini. Until one day, they stopped appearing, and a few weeks later, there were none.
"Nana, what's wrong with my plants?" I asked tearfully. "They're not growing anymore."
"That's what happens, darling. Things grow and then stop. Nothing lasts forever."
"But I was so good to them."
"Yes, but things end so new things can start," she said. "Seasons change, but for everything that ends, something new will take its place."
"I'll remember that," I said with a smile on my face.
3. Parking has been a problem for drivers for a long time in most cities in China. The Transportation Department is mapping out a new plan for the city's parking system. There are about 100 thousand cars on the road in a medium-sized city but only enough parking space to provide room for 15 percent of these vehicles. It is no wonder that local drivers get so worried trying to find a place to park.
The number of the private car owners is becoming larger and larger. A medium-sized city sometimes sends out about 1, 000 private car licenses in a month. This suggests that people have a strong, active interest in buying cars.
By the year 2016, the number of private cars in China reached about 150 million. If one parking lot is for one car, then a lot of parking space should be built. The center of most cities is short of parking space. However, simply building more parking lots in these areas is not practical and doesn't solve the problem. The idea of a "Park &Ride" system has been suggested. This means that underground train and city train should be developed quickly. Drivers can leave their vehicles in car parks nearby subway and bus stations and then they can ride public transport to go to the city center. Based on this idea, the city will cut down the number of parking lots in the city center and charge higher parking fees. But it will build more parking areas near main subway and bus stops.
4. We spend about one-third of our lives asleep. This may sound much, but it is not wasted. Our bodies need sleep to stay healthy. Not getting enough sleep can make us sick.
Sleep and our immune system (免疫系统)
The immune system protects the body from illnesses. Not getting enough sleep hurts this protective system. When we sleep, our bodies produce something that support sleep and help us fight illnesses. This will be less when you don't get enough sleep.
A new study shows that the immune system works best when the body gets enough sleep. For the study, Researchers studied 11 pairs of twins. This is an important difference from other sleep studies. Other research did not study twins. They found that the twin who slept less had a weaker immune system.
A long-term short of sleep influences parts of the immune system. Parts that move white blood cells around the body are influenced. White blood cells fight infections (感染) in the body. Sleep is important to "overall health", and especially important to immune health.
How much sleep is enough?
To stay in good health, adults should get 7 to 8 hours of sleep. Teenagers need 9 to 10 hours. And school﹣aged children may need more than 10hours of sleep a night. Our sleep becomes poor in our 30s. By the time we reach our 50s, the average person has lost 50 percent of their ability to have a restful sleep. These people also have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep through the night. This problem is _______ . From middle age on, these problems only get worse, and they can influence our health.
Signs you may not be getting enough sleep
●You're always hungry or you've gotten weight.
●You have trouble making decisions.
●You have trouble remembering things.
●Your skin doesn't look good.
●You are having trouble seeing.
