I thought that this would be a good chance to teach my children to help those who were less lucky than (3)       . I said to my seven-year-old twins, Brad and Brett, and three-year-old Meghan. 14. Each country has many kind people who volunteer to take care of others. For example, some high school and university students in the US often spend many hours as volunteers in hospital or old people's homes. They read books for the people or they just visit them and play games with them or listen to their problems.
Other young volunteers go and work in the homes of the sick people. They clean up their houses or do the shopping. For boys who don't have fathers there is an organization called "Big Brothers". University students and other people take these boys to play baseball games and help them get to know things that boys usually learn from their fathers.
Each city has a lot of clubs where boys and girls can go to play games or take part in other activities. Some of these clubs show movies or have short trips to the mountains, the beaches or the museums. Most of these clubs use a lot of high school and university students as volunteers because they can understand the problems of these boys and girls more easily.
Volunteers believe that some of the happiest people in the world are those who help to bring happiness to others.
15. I was driving in my car the other day. The sun was out, the radio was playing, and I was singing along. The song was a happy one and even my weak voice sounded good singing it. Then it happened, however. The sweet sound of the music ended and the news break began.
I drove on while the news started. Gas prices were getting high again. The race for the presidency was getting worse and worse. Fights broke out when the fans of a sports team went wild while celebrating their team' s win.
Finally, I could take no more and turned off the radio. I preferred staying in silence to listening to anything else about the crazy, competitive society we live in. I slowed down as I entered a town and watched the people as I drove by.
A man was helping an elderly lady out of a car and helping her place her walker so she could go into store.
A smiling woman was throwing some corns into her backyard while lots of birds flew down to enjoy the food before them.
A young man was walking along, carrying his 2-year-old daughter safely in his arms. He tickled her gently when she pulled the hat off his head and they both laughed. I laughed too as I looked at all of his kindness. Although the music was off, I felt my heart singing.
In truth, this world could use a little more kindness and a lot less competition. Kindness makes us all winners in life and shows us that we don' t have to beat others all the time.
16. What's a spacewalk? Any time an astronaut gets out of a spacecraft (航天器) while in space, it is called a spacewalk. Astronauts go on spacewalks for many reasons. For example, experiments can be placed on the outside of a spacecraft. This lets scientists learn how being in space affects (影响) different things. By going on spacewalks, astronauts can also fix things instead of bringing them back to the earth to fix.
When astronauts go on spacewalks, they wear spacesuits to keep themselves safe. Inside spacesuits, astronauts have the oxygen (氧气) they need to breathe and the water they need to drink. To keep the astronauts and the spacecraft safe, the astronauts must leave and go back to the spacecraft through a special door. When on a spacewalk, astronauts use safety tethers to stay close to their spacecraft. Tethers are like ropes, connect the spacewalkers with the spacecraft. They keep astronauts from floating (漂浮) away into space. Another way astronauts stay safe during spacewalks is by wearing a SAFER. SAFER is worn like a backpack. It helps an astronaut move around in space.
How do astronauts train for spacewalks? One way is by going for a swim. Floating in space is a lot like floating in water. Astronauts practice spacewalks underwater in a huge special swimming pool. For every one hour they will spend on a spacewalk, astronauts need to train seven hours in the pool. Another way astronauts practice for a spacewalk is by using virtual reality (虚拟现实). It looks and feels just like a spacewalk.
Today, only three countries have finished spacewalks independently. They are Russia, the United States and China. The first person to go on a spacewalk in the world was Alexei Leonov from Russia. Zhai Zhigang is the first Chinese astronaut to go on a spacewalk. The world record of spacewalks is held by Russian astronaut Anatoly Solovyev. He has been on 16 spacewalks and spent more than 82 hours outside in space.
17. Tom works in a big company and he is often very busy. One day, when he came out of the often, it was late in the evening. There was too busy at that moment so he had to walk home. The street was very dark and he could hardly see anything. So he had to walk along slowly and care fly.
Juts at that time, Tom found a man with a later coming in the distance. "If I go with that person, I will be able to see well," he thought
When the man with a later got nearer, Tom found he was coming with a cane (手杖) in his hand. Tom thought this was strange and asked, "Why are you walking so slowly with a cane when you have a late?"
The man said, "You know, I'm blind. That is why I use thins cane to walk. "Tom laughed, "Ha, ha, ha. You're blind? Then why do you carry a later? You don't need a later if you can't see."
The man with the later answered, "Yes, I can't see. And this later can not help me, but it can help others in the dark I know better than anyone else how it feels when you cannot.
Tom didn't say anything fora long time. Then he said sorry to the man see."
18. Reading is fun! Besides for fun, we can also analyze (分析) texts to learn more from the texts and more about the texts. One way we can do this is by finding out the theme of the texts.
(1)The theme of a text is the "big idea" that runs through the text, connecting the characters and events. It is what the writer wants to tell us through the story. Usually the theme of a text isn't told directly, you have to use clues (线索) in the text to find it out. (2)Themes can be ideas like family, friendship, love andso on. The theme might not be just one word, but it might be an idea such as "Friendship is important " There may also be more than one theme in a story. (3)我们怎样才能找出文本的主题呢? The following steps may help you.
Read through the whole text. Usually characters change as the story goes on, so the theme you get at the beginning might not be true at the end! For this reason, you need to read through the whole text first.
Find out the clue. After reading the whole text, try to answer the following questions. What important events happened during the story? What was the problem? How did the problem get solved? How did the character(s) change? What did the character(s) learn? The answers may help you to get the clues.
Get the big idea. (4)Read again for the writer's purpose of the text by answering the following questions. Was most of the plot (情节) around friendship? Did the characters solve problems with their families? Did the main character learn the importance of friendship? (5)如果你的一个答案为"是",  你就可能获得了它.
Have you got the way to find out the theme of a text? Get your favorite book quickly and see if you can find the theme out!
