18. Parents may think they're smart about where they store medicines, but their kids are smarter. Nearly 60,000 young children are rushed to the hospital every year after getting into medicines not meant for them, according to a new report from Safe Kids Worldwide.
The report finds little connection between what parents know about storing medicines safely and what they actually do. 9 out of 10 parents know that medicines should be stored up and away and out of reach and sight, but 7 out of 10 of them admit not doing that. They leave medicines out on kitchen counters, sinks and sofas, believing babies and toddlers (学步的儿童) aren't tall enough or strong enough to reach them. Unfortunately, they probably can. Children as young as a month have ended up in an emergency department because they have been poisoned by getting into a medicine that was left within reach.
Most poisonings related to medicines — particularly among babies and toddlers — occur within their home. Kids develop rapidly and they want to explore their environment. At certain ages they have a lot of activities using their hands and mouths, and so it's very common for them to explore their environment and then try to taste what they find.
The new Safe Kids Worldwide report includes a survey of 2, 000 parents with children under age 6. While the number of children visiting an emergency department for accidental poisonings has declined since the 2010 maximum, the decline has slowed in recent years.
Prescription and over-the-counter medicines cause the most severe poisonings, but vitamins and supplements (补给品) can also cause problems. There are steps families can take to lower the risk for an accidental medicine poisoning.
19. The island of Blefuscu is only about a kilometre to the north of Lilliput. I knew that just beyond the narrow sea separating the two countries there were at least fifty warships ready to attack us, with many other smaller ships. But I kept away from that side of the coast, so that the people of Blefuscu would not see me. I had a secret plan.
From the King's workmen I ordered fifty heavy metal hooks, each fastened to a piece of strong rope. I took off my coat and shoes, and walked into the sea with the hooks and ropes in my hands. The water was deep in the middle, so I had to swim for a few metres. But it only took me half an hour to get to Blefuscu.
When the Blefuscans saw me, they were so frightened that they jumped out of their ships and swam to the beach. I then used one hook for each ship, and tied all the ropes together at one end. While I was doing this, the enemy shot thousands of arrows at me, which caused me a lot of pain. I was afraid of getting an arrow in my eyes, but I suddenly remembered I still had an old pair of reading glasses in my pocket, so I put them on and continued my work. When I was ready, I started walking into the shallow water away from Blefuscu. As I walked through the waves, I pulled the enemy's warships behind me. When the people of Blefuscu realized that all their warships were disappearing, their cries were terrible to hear.
As I came nearer to Lilliput, I saw the King and all his lords and ladies standing on the beach. They could only see Blefuscu's warships coming closer, as I was swimming and my head was occasionally under the water. Therefore, they supposed that I had drowned, and that the Blefuscan ships were attacking. But when they saw me walking out of the sea, they welcomed me warmly with cries of astonishment and delight. The King himself came down to the water to meet me. I became a "nardac".

20. Edwin Hubble made his most important discoveries in the 1920s. Today, other astronomers continue the work he began. Many of them are using the Hubble Space Telescope that is named after him.
Edwin Powell Hubble was born in 1889 in Marshfield, Missouri. He spent his early years in the state of Kentucky. Then he moved with his family to Chicago, in Louisville. He attended the University of Chicago. He studied mathematics and astronomy. Hubble was a good student. He was a good athlete, too. He was a member of the University of Chicago championship basketball team in 1909. He also was an excellent boxer. Several people urged him to train for the world heavyweight boxing championship after college. Instead, he decided to continue his studies. He went to Queen's College at Oxford, England.
At Oxford, Hubble studied law. He was interested in British Common Law, because his family had come to America from England many years before. He spent three years at Oxford. In 1913, Hubble returned to the United States. He opened a law office in Louisville, Kentucky. After a short time, however, he decided he did not want to be a lawyer. He returned to the University of Chicago. There, once again, he studied astronomy. Edwin Hubble was the first person to use the Hale Telescope. He died in 1953 while preparing to spend four nights looking through the telescope at the sky.
Hubble's work led to new researches on the birth of the universe. One astronomer said scientists had been filling in the details ever since. And, he said, there's a long way to go.

31. An online forum themed on the symbiotic relationship between theatre culture and city development will be held today in Taicang city, East China's Jiangsu province.
The event is initiated by the Silk Road International League of Theaters, and this is the first time the organization is holding an international forum in the Yangtze River Delta since its launch in 2016.
Theater is a vital part of a city's public cultural infrastructure, and its relationship with the city reflects the links between culture and society in general. For citizens, theater is spiritual place as well as a carrier of public cultural services, which also instills a trace of warmth to the concrete and steel of a city.
Apart from the government officials of Taicang city, important members of the Silk Road International League of Theaters from Asia, Europe and the Mediterranean region will also join the forum, together they will pitch in their thoughts on the interactive relations between theater and city, and how the two can achieve mutual development.
Taicang is not only a city that boasts a long history and a rich traditional culture, but it was the departure port for the central government's grain supply in the Yuan Dynasty (1271—1368), as well as a logistics hub for overseas trade. Taicang Port was where Zheng He (1371—1435), the great Chinese navigator and explorer, started his voyages to the Indian Ocean during the Ming Dynasty (1368—1644). Today, over 80 shipping routes along the Yangtze River are connected to Taicang Port, making it a transit hub for domestic trade. The port also possesses 25 near—sea shipping routes that connect to countries and regions along the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road.
Initiated by the China Arts and Entertainment Group, the Silk Road International League of Theaters serves as a large multinational platform for performing arts, which aims to promote culture exchanges and improve artistic levels. By November last year, the organization had 130 members from 45 countries and regions across the world.
