Your "shenfenzheng" is probably one of the most important things you have as a Chinese citizen. You need to use it (1)       a lot of things, such as opening a bank account (账户) or getting a phone number. You probably got your "shenfenzheng" when you were quite (2)      . This is similar to the Social Security (社会保障) number that every US citizen gets at (3)      . We use these numbers for a lot of important things (4)      , such as filling out tax forms (税表) and applying for driver's licenses. So what will happen (5)       you don't have a shenfenzheng? As an American living in China, I've learned the hard way that there are some things you just can't do here (6)       one. For example, some courier (快递) services require a Chinese ID (7)       you can use them. If I want to send something to one of my Chinese friends, I have to "(8)      " their ID in order to send it. One of my favorite gaming platforms requires a Chinese ID if you want to play on Chinese servers (服务器) — I usually play on other servers that are a bit slower. Most of these things aren't a big deal. I can usually find a way to (9)       them. My Chinese friends who live in the US haven't complained about not having a Social Security number — I guess they just use their passport for (10)       things.

13. These days, many pictures of Chinese students wearing winged-hats have been posted on line. They use the hats to keep the distance when they return to school. Many people say the hats look like those worn during the Song Dynasty. But why did Song Dynasty officials wear hats that have "wings"?
It is true that in the Song Dynasty, officials wore hats that had two long straight wings. According to one legend (传说), the hats were designed by Zhao Kuangyin, the first emperor of the dynasty.
One day, when listening to a minister's report, Zhao noticed that many ministers were whispering (耳语) to each other and not respecting court's (朝廷的) rules. Zhao came up with a practical solution. He required that wings should be added to the ministers' hats.
Using a metal plate and bamboo strips as the frame, the "wings" prevented the ministers from talking to others sitting beside them. Since then, the court order had been kept.
Although the story is recorded in a book from the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), some historians think the story may not be true. The wing-like extensions might just be a decoration (装饰) that could make people look dignified (庄严的). As they were not convenient to wear, the hats gradually disappeared in later dynasty. Maybe days later the students will forget the "wings", too.
14. Guangdong province plans to make swimming lessons compulsory (必修的) in primary schools starting from 2021. And the courses will be given from the fourth grade. Do we need to make swimming compulsory in schools? Forum readers share their opinions.
  White Bear (Poland)
I think there should be the swimming lessons for kids. It is a lifesaving skill. In Poland, swimming lessons are not compulsory, but most of the schools have them. And I will start to learn swimming next term.
  Mister Panda (France)
I come from France where swimming lessons in school are compulsory (dating back to Charlemagne!). I even got my lifesaving certificate in school!
  Jet Feng (China)
As a boy born in a rural area, I learnt swimming in a river near my home when I was 7 or 8 years old. I used to play in the river with boys of my same age every summer, and we enjoyed it so much! After I entered university, I got a chance to improve my swimming skills in PE lessons. Compared with my classmates, I felt lucky because most of them couldn't swim.
I think it's a good idea for schools to teach students to swim. But in fact, not every school in China has the conditions to do that. In some less-developed areas, there is not even a swimming pool for a whole county with a population of half a million people.
  Boilermaker 21 (Expat in China)
There are swimming lessons in my city, but I was very disappointed in how they were taught. The kids spent 45 minutes of the one hour lesson practicing strokes ON DRY LAND. They only spent 15 minutes in the water. All of the children panicked and sank immediately to the bottom. Then all of the parents were angry with the children, telling them that they weren't paying attention to the teacher and that they were failures.
15. Most of us feel younger or older than we really are. This "subjective age" is simply based on the way we feel inside. Scientists find that "subjective age" is the key to understanding why some people appear to be energetic as they age — while others do not. What's more, studies have shown that you really are only as old as you feel in some real ways.
One interesting study has discovered our subjective age is connected with our personality. It is now well-accepted that people tend to become less open to new experiences while ageing. However, such personality changes are less pronounced in people with a younger heart and more noticeable in people with older subjective ages. Moreover, people with younger subjective ages become more careful and make fewer mistakes. But the connection between health and subjective age almost certainly acts in both directions. If you often feel upset, you are likely to feel older. The result could be a vicious cycle (恶性循环). In this way, the effect of subjective age on health is stronger than that of actual age.
When do we start to feel that our minds and bodies are running on different timescales? And why does it happen? One study finds that most children and teenagers feel older than they really are. But this changes at around 26, when 70% of them would feel younger. Some researchers argue that a lower subjective age is a form of self-defense. Believing "I may be 65 but I only feel 50" would mean you are less worried about your performance at work, for example. This thinking helps people free themselves from the society's sad view of ageing.
With these findings, it is possible that in the future, science might be able to reduce people's subjective age and improve their health as a result.
16. Former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill once said, "The British are the only people who like to be told how bad things are." This is definitely true of British comedy. Most people think humor is about happy things, but not for the British. We love to use our cruel sense of humor to complain and be negative (消极的).
British comedy, for example, draws a fine line between comedy and tragedy. BBC's The Office is a TV show, famous for its dry humor. The main character, David Brent, is a foolish man, and the show's comedy comes from his delusions (错觉的). For example, he often tells himself that he is loved by everyone but the viewer can see that everyone hates him.
Stupid characters for the audience to laugh at are an old tradition in Britain. In Shakespeare's play Twelfth Night, the character Malvolio is an old man whom people play tricks on. The audience will laugh away, although the reality is that this man is a truly poor person.
This side of British humor is reflected (反映) in friendships as well. At university, my friends and I would always laugh at one another. I had an American friend who actually found this sarcasm (挖苦) quite upsetting. She didn't realize that in Britain, the better friends you are with someone, the more you laugh at them.
This way — laughing at everything — may sound rather depressing (沮丧), but our strange humor played a big part in British history. There is a saying in English: "________" If you are ever on the receiving end of British sarcasm, you may feel like crying, but it's best to just laugh it off!
