1. It was 6:00pm. Mr. Black was driving to No. 1 Middle School to pick up his son, Dave. Then he was in trouble.
Kate, a girl from the school, was walking home. She always read stories on her phone when walking. Bad habit! The story was so interesting that she didn't(1)      the traffic lights turn red.
Mr. Black drove fast(2)      school was over at 5:30 pm. He was already(3)       . Dave called and Mr. Black tried to answer the phone. He didn't see Kate crossing the road. His car hit her. Kate was lying on the road. Her(4)      was broken, and she lost a lot of blood. Mr. Black hurt his arms.
Another car stopped right away. A man and a woman(5)      . They called 120 and 122. They bandaged Kate and then pulled Mr. Black out of the car. The doctors came(6)      . They took Kate to the hospital. Two policemen came, too. They used a truck to pull Mr. Black's car off the road. (7)      , Kate didn't lose her leg at last.
"No phones on the road again!" Kate's parents told(8)      .
"No phone when driving!" Mr. Black told himself.
2. Cricket (板球) — how I hated this game when I was young! My family would spend hours watching it on television while I(1)      waited for it to end. Every (2)       seemed the same. One team won and the other one lost. And the players were always doing the same things﹣ some throwing a ball. The others running back and forth.
Then (3)      happened. I became old enough to start playing cricket myself with the kids in my neighborhood. We found a place to play whenever we could. We played on the street, in the backyard(4)      on the tops of buildings!
I can still(5)      the sounds of the ball hitting the bat and the quick running feet. I can still feel the bruises and scratches(碰伤和划伤) from falling down. I can still see the blue sky slowly becoming dark as our games (6)      into the night. It became my favorite thing in the world.
Now I watch it not with anger, but with good (7)      of the endless days and nights spent playing the game.
3. There are lots of clubs at our school and you can do what you like in these clubs.

4. It was the third Saturday morning in December. My son, Mark, took all his pocket money to buy holiday presents.
I drove him to the supermarket. Mark picked up a hand basket (手提篮) and went in when I waited in the car. It took Mark over 45 minutes to choose his presents. Finally he came to the checkout counter (收银台) and his hand reached into the pocket for his money. It was not there! There was a hole (洞) in his pocket, but no money. Mark stood there holding the basket, with tears (眼泪) falling down his face.
Just then a woman came up to him and said, "You would help me a lot if you let me pay for you. It would be the most wonderful gift you could give me. When you grow up, I want you to find someone you can help. When you help others, you will feel as good about it as I do now. "
Mark took the money, dried his tears and ran back to the check counter. That year we all enjoyed our gifts as much as Mark enjoyed giving them to us.
I would like to say "thank you" to that kind woman, and tell her that four years later, Mark went from house to house to collect clothes for the homeless (无家可归的) people in the earthquake. And he will never forget to keep passing it on.
5. I left my hometown in London last year and now I have enjoyed working in this small city in China. Learning a foreign language opens your eyes to the culture and history of a country. So in order to know more about China, l started to learn Chinese.
But at times, I found myself in funny situations. When I greeted strangers in China, they began to talk a lot and very fast. They asked me questions about everything. But all I could do was to look at them with a blank face. I had no idea what they were talking about. Were they just being kind, funny or impolite? Many people want to make friends with me. But I am a bit upset when I find out the reason why they need a foreign friend. They say they want to practice their English. I don't need friends like this. I like friends to share my feelings and ideas with.
However, the more Chinese I learn, the more similarities I find it has with English. In English, "thickskinned" is to describe a person who doesn't care about criticism (批评). I was surprised to find that "houlianpi" in Chinese means the same. And both languages share some common idioms (习语). For example, "look on with folded arms" means "xiushoupangguan", and "burn the boats" is similar to "pofuchenzhou". I'm still on my journey to Chinese learning. I believe that sometimes you have the most fun on a journey.
6. Virtual reality (虚拟现实) is coming for the cows. A team of researchers have developed VR headsets for cows living on a farm just outside of Moscow. They want these cows to believe that they are standing in summer fields, rather than the cold ones. .In this case, VR is being used to trick the cows into thinking that they are standing in a nice warm field, when, in fact, they really aren't.
Now people use the VR headsets to play the VR games or to lose themselves in virtual environments. There is a risk that VR will become a seductive (诱惑的) activity. People would like to turn to VR, simply because it's easier and there enjoyable.
One of the studies in Journal ?of Happiness Studies shows that people, especially the old, women and those out of work, are very likely to watch TV when they are unhappy. This kink of situation can be made worse influence human emotions. In the future , we might increasingly turn to virtual reality to achieve excitement and happiness. But as with the cows in Moscow, this won't change the reality of our lives.
