12. What do you think of a woman scientist? Perhaps you imagine a pair of thick glasses and messy hair forehead. With her high﹣heeled shoes and beautiful posture (姿势), Yan Ning may break that boring type.
Named "the goddess scientist", Yan Ning, 42, is a leading biology researcher at Princeton University in the US. On April 30, 2019, she was included among 100 new numbers and 25 foreign associates (院士) into the National Academy of Sciences (美国国家科学院).
You may not know Yan's success in biology, but she is a rising star in the science world and her experience is exciting. After graduating from Tsinghua in 2007, at the age of 30, she became one of China's youngest﹣ever women professors.
It was a long road to get where she is now. Yan likes to work at night. She says it's because she can pay attention to something when the outside is quiet. She also works at least 14 hours a day, but she's active, because research is the most "comfortable" job for her, according to an interview with People magazine.
Besides scientific research, Yan enjoys TV plays and classic novels. Surprisingly, the novel Journey to the West encouraged her to become a structural (结构的) biologist. In the book, the Monkey King changes into other animals. She wondered what it would be like to change herself. Luckily, Yan now lives in that world every day, searching how proteins (蛋白质) work at the level of atoms (原子). "It was almost certain that I would become a structural biologist, " She said in an interview with Nature.
As she realizes her own dreams, Yan tries to encourage more women to work for science. In her eyes, there is no difference between men and women in the scientific fields.
13. For many years, sales of garlic (大蒜) in California had been little because of the much cheaper garlic from China. This year, however, California garlic sales are rising because American government increases tariffs (关税) on Chinese products.
Christopher, a garlic grower in California, is manager of his company and he said, "In a perfect world, we would love to see the tariffs on China. "
Tariffs on Chinese garlic rose from 10% to 25% on May 9, 2019, and the reason is that U. S President Donald Trump (特朗普总统) increased tariffs on Chinese products worth of $200 billion. Since then, Chinese buyers have almost stopped buying soybeans (黄豆) from the United States and American soybean farmers are now getting worried.
Not everyone likes the garlic tariffs in the U. S. Last July, Christopher expressed his support on Trump's policy (政策). However, officials from McCormick and Company Inc. didn't agree with the policy. McCormick's CEO, Lawrence told Reuters (路透社) that without Chinese garlic America can't go. Actually , the trade war (贸易战) between China and America is a sign of American hegemony (霸权), and        will destroy American economy and U. S government will lose its trust from other countries in the world.
14. "In this life, what did you miss?"
The wife asked the husband when she was 25. Despondently (沮丧地), the husband replied, "I missed a new job chance. "
When she was 35, the husband angrily told her that he had just missed the bus.
At the age of 45, the husband sadly said, "I missed the chance seeing my close relative before his last breath. "
At 55, the husband said disappointedly, "I missed a good chance to retire(退休). "
At 65, the husband hurriedly replied, "I missed visiting my dentist. "
At 75, the wife did not ask the husband any more, she was very sick. Remembering the question the wife used to ask him, this time the husband asked the wife the same question. The wife, with a smile and peaceful look, replied, "In this life, I did not miss having you!"
The husband was full of tears. He always thought they could be together forever. He was always busy with work and other things. He has never thought of his wife. The husband gave a big hug to the wife and said, "Over 50 years, how I had allowed myself to miss your deep love for me. "
Life does not last forever, so always live in the now. Don't neglect (忽视) the loved ones who care for you. Express your gratitude (感激) to your loved ones in words. Show your love with actions. Treat every day as the last day of life. In this way, when you are gone, your loved ones would have nothing to feel sorry about.
15. "How are you?" is a nice question. It's a friendly greeting that people in the United States use. (1)       It's a question that often doesn't need an answer. The person who asks, "How are you?" expects to hear the answer "Fine, " even if the person isn't fine. The reason is that "How are you?" isn't really a question and "Fine" isn't really an answer. They are common ways of saying "hello" or "hi".
  (2)      For example, when someone asks "Do you agree?", the other person may be thinking, "No, I don't. I think you're wrong. " It isn't polite to disagree very strongly, so he might say, "I am not so sure. " (3)
People also don't say exactly what they are thinking when they finish talking to other people. For example, many conversations over the phone end when one person says, "I've got to go now, " or the person who wants to hang up gives an excuse such as "Someone is at the door, " or, "Something is burning on the stove. " (4)       The person who wants to hang up simply doesn't want to talk any more, but it isn't polite to say so. An excuse is polite, and it doesn't hurt the other person's feelings.
Whether they are greeting each other, talking about an opinion, or ending a conversation, people often don't say exactly what they are thinking. (5)      .

A.This is a nicer way to say that you don't agree with someone.
B.You'd better not to tell the truth to your family.
C.However, "How are you?" is also an unusual question.
D.The excuse may be real, or not.
