34. We often have practice for a fire at school, and we all know the dangers of fires. But it's good and necessary for a family to learn how to prepare for a fire. Here are suggestions.
Put a smoke alarm in the house. Smoke from a fire causes the alarm to go off. The alarm makes a loud sound. The sound tells everyone to leave the house at once.
Make escape(逃脱) plans. We should know all the ways out of the house. If there is a fire, everyone follows the plan to get out. Part of the plan is to check all the windows to make sure they can be opened easily.
Buy fire extinguishers(灭火器) in the house. Everyone in the family should know how to use them.
Practice for a fire. We do fire practice because we teach children about fire safety. Everyone in the family should know the following fire rules:
☆Don't open a hot door! The fire can grow more quickly if you open the door,
☆Stay close to the floor!Smoke can be more dangerous than fire. The best is near the floor because smoke rises.
☆What will you do if your hair or clothes start to burn?First, stop!Don't run!The fire burns faster because of more air. Drop!Fall to the floor. Then roll!Turning over and over will make the fire go out.
There are many possible causes for fires. A wise family is ready for a fire all the time.
35. It was Mary's birthday. She received a letter from her uncle who was a farmer.
"Dear Mary," the letter said, "Happy birthday. I am sending you some chickens. They will arrive tomorrow. I hope you like them. Best wishes, Uncle Tony."
Mary was very (1)      . She liked eating eggs and chicken. "I can keep the chickens for their (2)      or eat them." she thought. When the chickens arrived the next day, they were in the box. Mary was very excited. She took the box off the back of the truck and began to carry it into her garden.
  (3)      , the box of chickens was heavy and she dropped it. The box fell to the ground and broke. The chickens all ran out. They ran (4)       — into neighbors' gardens, into the road, into shops, even into the next street. Mary spent hours trying to find them and take them back to her garden.
A few days later, her uncle came to visit her. "Did the chickens arrive (5)      ?" he asked Mary.
"Yes, Uncle Tony, " Mary said. "But I had a lot of trouble with them. I dropped the box. It broke and the chickens ran away. I spent the whole morning (6)       them."
"Did you find them all?" her uncle asked. "I hope so," Mary answered, "but I only caught eleven of them."
"That's very interesting. I only sent you six." Her uncle said with smile.
36. Nowadays most students have a heavy school bag on their backs on their way to school or on their way home after school. Not only the students in China have this problem, but the children in the United States (1)a       have the problem of heavy school bags.
Doctors are starting to worry that younger and younger students are having back and neck problems as a result of school bags being too heavy for them.
"It's (2)h       for me to go upstairs with my school bag because it's so heavy." said Rick Hammond, an eleven-year-old student in the US. His (3)f       is on the sixth floor.
Rick is among the students who have common school bags with two straps (背带) to carry them, but many other students (4)c       rolling bags. But even with rolling bags, getting upstairs and on buses is still a problem for children. Many of them have hurt their backs and necks because of the heavy school bags.
But how much is too much?Doctors say students should carry no more than 10% to 15% of their own body weight.
Scott Bautch, a back doctor, said children (5)u       Grade 4 should stay with 10%. But it is important that older kids don't go beyond 15% because their bodies are still growing. Bautch said that there are other injuries caused by backpacks. "Children are losing their balance (失去平衡) and (6)f       down with theses school bags," he said.
Parents and teachers are starting to tell children to only take books home that they reading that night. Some teachers are using worksheets (7)o        thin workbooks for students to take home. One of the best answer is, as some children said, to have no homework at all.
37. Teenagers believe anything is possible if they study hard. But they often forget to think about healthy diets, enough sleep time and exercise. In fact, these things are really important for them to keep fit.
It is important for teenagers to get enough energy. Teenage girls need about 2, 200 calories (卡路里) a day while boys need a bit more — doctors suggest 2, 800 calories for teenage boys. 50% of the calories should come from healthy food — rice, vegetables and fruits. People often say an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Teenagers also need to drink a lot of water, 6 to 8 glasses a day. Drinking enough water will improve (改善)their skin.
Teenagers usually need eight to ten hours' sleep every night, but many Chinese teenagers do not get enough sleep. A report shows that without a good night's sleep, teenagers will be weaker than they should be. Too much homework is not the only reason why teenagers stay up late. Some watch TV or play computer games into the night. Teenagers should develop (培养) good study habits. So some clever students never study late, but they are able to work well in class.
Exercise is something that can help them. Experts suggest that teenagers should spend at least 30 minutes exercising a day, five times a week. They will feel relax when they exercise. It can even help them sleep better at night.
38.Write a short passage of at least 60 words on the topic "I want to change my bad habits". (以《我要改掉我的坏习惯》为题写一篇不少于60个词的短文, 标点符号不占格.)
