20. You may know a lot about smartphones. But what about smart cities?
Imagine living your life like this:When you wake up in the morning, you say "Open the window" to the computer and it opens the window. The sunshine is shining and the birds are singing. Then you finish breakfast and sit in front of your desk and begin to have classes through the Internet. With the help of building a smart city, this may become true one day.
A smart city uses digital technologies (数字科技) such as the Internet to improve city planning, save resources (资源) and make our lives easier. For example, people live in smart cities, where there is Internet almost everywhere. They can do many things at home, such as booking train tickets, paying water bills and shopping online. What a convenient life it is!
Now China is making some cities smarter. For example, Guiyang is going to build free Wi-Fi in the whole city. Tianjin plans to start a smart city program to solve traffic problems. Guangzhou is creating a smart city, so everyone in the city should play a role in creating a smart city.
21. If you find this article on the Internet, you may say "I'll read this later." to yourself. Or you may read it before finishing all the other important tasks that day. Either way, you are procrastinating (拖延).
Procrastination stops us from doing our tasks so that we can have more fun at present. Luckily, if we can understand why we're looking for fun instead of doing what we should do, we can stop procrastination and live a more fruitful life.
We run away from tasks because we find it hard to control our emotions (控制情绪). Without this ability, we wouldn't do anything we don't want to do. This idea of doing what we dislike makes us feel really terrible. That's why our subconscious (潜意识) believes we'll be able to get out of doing these tasks if we procrastinate.
If the idea of doing your task fills you with so much worry or fear that you can't get stared, try something you like. You can play your favorite song and dance around the room or give yourself 10 minutes to play with a pet. Once you've had a try, you might find the task is not as terrible as it seems.
Well, the next step is simple:Just get started.
You can do it by stopping finding excuses to procrastinate in the first place. For example you may be very tired, and you believe you will do better after you have rested. What's more helpful is to believe that even though you're too tired to finish your task. you might still be able to start and get a little bit done.
If you can control bad feelings, you can do the next thing that needs to be done, and at that point, you've already won part of the battle (战役). Take action!
22. We've all been in conversations where we've known that the other person wasn't really paying attention. According to the University of Missouri, 45% of communication is listening, and yet most people remember only 25% to 50% of the information they hear. Whether you're in a classroom, a business setting, or a relationship, failing to hear 75% what's said to you is sure to lead to big problems. Active listening helps solve them.
  What is Active Listening?
It means more than listening to the words that are said. Instead, you think about what you hear, and try to find out the purpose, content, and emotion from the speaker. Active listening requires paying attention. If you're watching TV or looking at your phone while someone is talking, you're not actively listening.
The other side of active listening is making sure the other person knows that you're doing so. Signs like eye contact and replying with insightful(有深刻见解的)comments are important.
  Why Active Listening Matters
Verbal (言语的) communication is very important in every part of life. Active listening can help you communicate better, reduce misunderstandings, and build more successful family or working relationships.
For example, family members often have bad listening habits. They don't pay attention to what is said because they think they know what is coming next. They hear what they expect to hear, instead of what family members actually say. Active listening makes it possible to solve this problem.
  Learning How to Listen
Active listening takes practice. Here are a few tips on improving your listening skills:
Pay attention! Put down your phone and make eye contact with the person talking to you. Make notes in mind about the speaker's main point, as well as a few specific things they're saying. Why are they telling you this? How does the speaker feel about what they're saying? Don't think about answering. Focus on what they want you to hear.
Show that you're listening. The speaker can tell if you're paying attention. Make eye contact, nod when you need to, and give small verbal comments like "yes" and "huh". But don't repeat something they've just said. This might seem like a good way to show that you're listening, but it can derail (使脱轨) the conversation.
Offer feedback (反馈). When the opportunity comes up, you'll be able to offer insightful feedback on what was said. This might take the form of reflecting on what was said, asking follow﹣up questions, of offering your own viewpoint. Active listening can avoid that deer-in-the-headlights feeling that can happen when someone asks, "What do you think?" If you've been actively listening, you'll be ready to answer thoughtfully.
23. What will the home of the future look like?A team of architects (建筑师) in Hong Kong say that city homes will be tiny, as populations continue to grow and space becomes more expensive.
They have designed "spaceflats" that are just 30 square meters in size. These flats have three small rooms:a living room, a bathroom and a bedroom, as well as a balcony (阳台), but everything is carefully planned to make good use of the limited space.
The living room is the main room of the flat. It can be used as an office, a kitchen even a second bedroom. There is a sofa that can be changed into a bed. The dining table can be changed into a computer desk. And, if not needed, both the sofa-bed and the table can be folded away and stored into a small space in the wall. There is a flat-screen TV, which can also serve as a computer monitor. In one of the room, a small cooker, a microwave oven and a miniature (微型) refrigerator are hidden out of sight.
The other rooms are small but practical. The bathroom contains a toilet and a shower. The double bed in the bedroom can also be a sofa, if necessary . The balcony has enough room for two people to sit and enjoy the view from the block of flats. All the rooms have high ceiling to provide as much storage space as possible, while the flat has large windows to let in plenty of sunlight.
"Spaceflats" are now being tested in a building in Hong Kong. "It's wonderful, " said one resident (居民) . "The flat is so well designed that you feel that there is plenty of space."
