9. During the National Holiday, there is no doubt that the most popular movie must be My People, My Country. It is an epic (史诗) seven-part movie to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of the people's Republic of China, recording the nation's greatest technological and cultural achievements of different ages.
Each part focuses not on the heroes of the hour, but on everyday people and how their lives connect personally with China's development. The following stories are chosen from the movies.
In Xu Zheng's part, The Champion, a young boy must secure a TV aerial (天线) to the roof of his home so his neighbors can watch the Chinese women's volleyball team play in the 1984 Olympic final.
Going Home is about Hong Kong's return to China in1997. It focuses on a Chinese soldier tasked with hoisting the national flag on the stroke of midnight (午夜钟声).
One for All, directed by Wen Muye, focuses on a top female fighter jet pilot who helps her fellow pilots finish a smooth aerial performance, part of the military parade (阅兵) to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (抗战胜利) in 2015.
10. The research was carried out in order to reduce the effects of paper production on deforestation (滥伐森林). The researchers, from Shandong University in China and the University of California, Riverside, said that the secret behind the technology is a color-changing chemical. A thin coating of the chemical can be used on usual paper and turn it into a reusable, light﹣printable one. Heating the paper for 10 minutes can help clear the information away more quickly.
Researchers have developed paper that can be printed with UV light (紫外线), free from the need for ink. People can clear the information away on the light﹣printable paper by heating it to 120℃and it can be reused more than80 times.
Professor Yadong Yin, a chemistry professor at the University of California and a co-author of the study, said, "The greatest importance of our work is the development of a new technology to produce an ink﹣free rewritable paper that has the same feel and appearance as usual paper. Our work is believed to have great economic and environmental influences on the modern society."
Paper production has a bad influence on the environment. It's the main cause of industrial pollution and paper thrown away by people makes up about 40%of landfills where waste is buried under the ground.
It is predicted that light-printable paper will be inexpensive in the future. The printing process is also more cost﹣effective than the usual one as no ink is needed. Most importantly, it can be reused many times, which greatly reduces the cost.
11. The businessman traveled far and worked hard until, finally, it was time to set off home. He packed all the presents he had bought, but decided to get a fresh rose for Bella when he was closer to home. On his journey home, a terrible storm came.
Luckily, the businessman found a place to shelter (躲避). He ran to the door. To his surprise, it was open but the house seemed empty. It looked warm and welcoming him.
"Is there anybody home?" he called. But there was nobody to, be seen or a sound to be heard. Tired and wet, the businessman sat down by the fire. Invisible (无形的) hands gave him warm drinks and good food. Invisible hands put a cushion (垫子) behind his head. He couldn't believe his eyes. "I must be dreaming, "he thought.
The next morning, the businessman awoke and remembered he had to get a rose for Bella. In the garden, he found a beautiful rose bush. He started to dig up a small part of it. Then he heard a terrible roar(咆哮), "How dare you take my roses!" Suddenly, a great hairy beast (野兽) appeared, roaring loudly.
"Please don't hurt me!" begged the businessman. "I'll do anything." "Then you must promise to send me the first creature (生物) you see when you get home." "Aha!" thought the businessman, "I will see the chickens around my door first." So he gave his promise.
Sadly, the first creature he saw was not a chicken, a cat or a dog. It was Bella, who came running out to greet him. The businessman went as pale (苍白的) as moonlight. He told her the whole story. Bella did not think twice. "A promise is a promise," she said.
12. Facebook has quietly released an app called Lasso that lets users create fun, short videos designed to compete with TikTok, the viral 15-second video app, which is known as Douyin in China.
Lasso is Facebook's latest plan to win over teens, and the large social media platform has lost its users. In 2018, only half of teens say they still use Facebook, compared to in 2014, when 71 percent of them said they did.
It is said that, on Lasso, users can record themselves dancing and lip-syncing (对嘴型) to music, similar to what they can already do on TikTok. The app also lets users record short clips. It's available on iOS and Android.
Facebook said:"Lasso is a new app for short-form, entertaining (娱乐性的) videos-from comedy to beauty to fitness and more. We're excited about the potential here, and we'll be gathering feedback from people and creators. "
You can sign in to Lasso through Instagram or create an account using Facebook. However, you'll have to authorize (授权) the app to allow access to your profile page, photos, and videos. After that's set up, you're free to scroll (闲逛) through tons of short videos that autoplay as you pass by them. But you're also unable to make your profile private.
Still, like Facebook Watch, Lasso might be a couple of years late. Bytedance's TikTok has been around since 2016.
13. After five years of living in China, it was time for me and my family to say goodbye to our beloved city, Shenzhen, the place we had grown to love and that felt more home to us than our own home cities.
After months of struggling, our family of five, including me, my husband, our 1-year-old daughter and two 4-year-old sons and one adopted dog left China. Our hearts full of mixed emotions. I knew I was going to miss China, especially Shenzhen.
In Shenzhen, I often went out shopping with my smartphone and used WeChat Pay. I would feel so strange to carry a purse filled with paper money and plastic cards, but the world outside China was still using the old ways. But something good for me is that I got plenty of cardio (有氧的) walking back and forth from supermarkets.
Even though I didn't live there anymore, I would still keep my habit of checking Shenzhen news on the newspapers and in WeChat accounts twice a day. There were tons of options of street food. Although some of them were unhealthy, they were delicious and I still loved them. Online shopping played an important role in my life when I lived here. In China we have Taobao, Tmall, JD, Baopals for non﹣Chinese speakers, and plenty other WeChat sellers. Never did I have to run to the supermarket for a pack of bread or eggs. Sadly, that's not the case anymore.
And last but not least, I will definitely miss my friends and my online/offline community. It is clear that I am in love with China and the city of Shenzhen and no matter how long I stay away, it will always have a special place in my heart.
