A Special Bonus — English Short Stories for Beginners
Ideal for complete beginners or children learning English:
  *54 pages long
  *Fully illustrated (有插图的)
  *Simple and easy
There are many English short stories for English learners, but not many of them are suitable for complete beginners or children.
Complete beginners are those learners who have just learned the alphabet, leaned the basic simplified sounds of the letters and hardly have any vocabulary.
As mentioned above, it can be a real challenge to find stories and activities that are suitable for students. Most stories at this stage are either too complex or simply not interesting. This is especially true if they are beginners. Most stories have at least some of the following flaws:
*too advanced, or too complicated (难懂的) for beginners
  *hard to understand
  *not rally interesting
*contain idioms and other advanced vocabulary structures
  *too long
These things are likely to reduce the student's motivation and make lessons less effective.
39. When you learn a language, listening, speaking and writing are important, but reading can also be very helpful. It is a very active (1)       which has many advantages, including:
  Learning Vocabulary in Context
You will usually encounter new words when you read. If there are too many new words for you, then the level is too high and you should read something simpler. But if there are at most 5 new words per page, you will learn this vocabulary easily. You may not even need to use a (2)       because you can guess the meaning from the rest of the text (from the context).
  A (3)       for Writing
When you read, it gives you a good example for writing. Text that you read shows you structures and expressions that you can use when you write.
  Seeing "Correctly Structured" English
When people write, they usually use "correct English" with a proper grammatical structure.
This is not always true when people (4)      . So by reading you see and learn grammatical English naturally.
  Working at Your Own Speed
You can read as fast or slowly as you like. You can read ten pages in 30 minutes, or take one hour to explore just one page. It doesn't matter. The choice is (5)      : You cannot easily do this when speaking or listening. This is one of the big advantages of reading because different people work at different speeds.
  Personal Internet
If you choose something to read that you like, it can actually be interesting and enjoyable.
For example, if you like to read about football in your own language, why not read about football in English? You will get information about football and improve your English (6)      .
40. Schools are now running remote (远程) lessons for more than 90 percent of ENSW students because of COVID-19 (冠状病毒) crisis, and the situation likely (1)l             for months. The NSW Department of Education says the lessons are designed to be done without parents' too much caring.
But parents are still under the pressure of trying to support their students' learning, saying they have been given an (2)i             task.
One parent said she spent the week working at her job, then the weekend catching up on all the work her children had missed, doing housework at night. Another single mother wakes at 3 a.m. to do her paid work so that she can supervise (监督) her children (3)d             the day.
"Do they understand that parents are fighting for our lives, our jobs, and our companies as well?" another parent said. "I'm a working mum. If I don't do my job, I may (4)l             it. I know things had to be done in a hurry. But parents have been thrown in the deep end."
Yvette McDonald, from the inner west, has two young children at a pubic primary school, which issues (发布) written lessons and requires typed, (5)o             communication, such as being present for roil call (点名) at the (6)b             and the end of each day. She has asked the NSW Department of Education to relax those rules, saying they were difficult to carry out.
"Parents are already at breaking point and we haven't even gone into formal lockdown," she said. "Many of us are managing crisis at work, but then on top of that we're schooling our children as well. We feel as though we're failing, but we're not failing — we've been (7)a             to do very difficult things. We want to know what's essential and what's not."
41. Half a year before graduation from college, my son began to seek a job. Due to the financial crisis (危机), fewer companies would like to employ new staff. My son targeted a company that was going to hire only one person while there were more than twenty people filling their resumes (简历).
After the interview, there would only be 3 who could enter the final round, which would later decide one person to be employed. Everything seemed to go quite well and my son passed the first round and entered the final round in a week.
On the day of the final interview, my son and other two candidates arrived at the interview place on time, waiting for the test. Unexpectedly, the interview was unbelievably simple. The interviewer only said to them, "All of you are very super. Please go home and wait for our notice. We will tell you the result in 3 days. Good luck to all of you!" On the morning of the third day, my son received a text from the company shortly after breakfast that he was not employed. We all felt very disappointed.
In nightfall that day, my son suddenly told me excitedly on the phone, "Dad, I have been employed!" Greatly surprised, I could not wait to ask him, "What's the whole matter?" My son told me that he received another text saying that he was employed. Actually, the first text sent to my son was also part of the test in the interview. Three men received the same text this morning and only my son's reply was "Thank you." while the others said "Goodbye".
Only then did I know that my son's "hope" came in that way. That is, when you feel disappointed, do not forget to say "Thank you." to the one who disappoints you. Saying "Thank you." shows respect for others' work and shows you are generous. Therefore, while under the same condition, you will get the upper hand in terms of opportunities compared with others!
