14. Food deliverymen (送餐员) are always in a hurry. They wear blue, red or yellow helmets (头盔) and many of them don't follow traffic (交通) rules. They drive on the wrong side of the road and run red lights. They use mobile phones while driving.
In the first half of 2019, food deliverymen had 76 traffic accidents in Shanghai, according to Shanghai Public Security Bureau (上海公共安全局). That means every two and a half days, a food deliveryman will die or get hurt on the road.
What makes deliverymen put themselves into such a danger? The strict rules of the food delivery service companies and the worried customers (顾客) may be the answer. Many companies will fine (罚款) a deliveryman up to 2,000 yuan if he fails to deliver an order on time, reported China Daily. Fines also go to those who get bad reviews (评价) from customers.
To solve the problem, food delivery service companies need to do some changes. Some cities are also taking action. Shanghai has asked companies to train their deliverymen on traffic rules and safety. Now in Shenzhen, if a deliveryman breaks traffic rules more than twice, then he can't do the job for a whole year.
15. (an extract from Probuditi!)
Calvin waited outside Trudy's bedroom. Then it happened - a scream, a very loud scream. Calvin ran to his room and dived into bed.
He heard Mama coming down the hall.
"Did you do this?" his mother asked. Calvin looked out from under the covers. His mother stood over him, holding a rubber spider.
  "Do what?" he asked.
"You put that thing in my bed," Trudy told him, stepping out from behind Mama.
"Don't think that just because it's your birthday you can get away with something like this," Mama scolded (责骂).
"You do want your present, don't you?" That wiped the smile off Calvin's face.
  "Course I do," he said.
  "Then you apologize (道歉)."
Calvin dropped his head. "Sorry Trudy," he muttered (嘟囔).
"Here," Mama said. "Happy birthday." At the breakfast table she handed Calvin an envelope. Inside were tickets to the matinee show of Lomax the Magnificent, the world-famous magician and hypnotist. "You've got two tickets there," Mama said, "and I know someone who'd really love to go along." She smiled at Trudy.
"You don't mean here, do you?" Calvin asked, eyeing his little sister.
"Well, that would be really nice. But those tickets are yours. If you want to ask somebody—" Calvin didn't wait for his mother to finish. He rushed out of the house to tell Rodney, his pal next door, that the two of them were going to see Lomax the Magnificent.
16. Ask someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will almost mention recycling, which is the process (过程) of treating used things, such as paper or steel so that they can be used again. Recycling in the home is very important of course. However, being forced to recycle often means we already have more things than we need. We are now dealing with the results of that over-consumption in the possible greenest way, but it would be far better if we did not bring so many things home in the first place.
Here is an example. In the UK, the total of packaging increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005. It now makes up a third of a household's waste. In many supermarkets, foods are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard.
Too much packaging causes serious environmental problems. The UK is running out of different kinds of ways for dealing with this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect (效果). Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. The best way of avoiding this problem is to stop producing such unnecessary things in the first place. Food waste is another serious problem, too. Too many supermarkets encourage customers (消费者) to buy more than they need. They seldom encourage customers to reuse their plastic bags, for example. However, a few of them are coming round to the idea that this cannot continue.
But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us. We have learned to connect packaging with quality (质量). We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality. Is it true for all the products? In fact, more and more companies realized the importance of protecting the environment. They try to package what really should be packaged, including products in good quality.
As more of us recycle, we are beginning to realize how many unnecessary things are being collected. We need to face the waste of our daily life. Although many people have taken action to recycle, we have a high mountain to climb.
17. When we say someone is in a blue mood, it means he or she is unhappy or sad. It's important for everyone to be happy. Here are some fast and easy ways to cheer you up.
  Exercise
When you exercise, your brain gives out a chemical called Endorphin (内啡肽). This chemical makes you feel happy. That is why exercise is good for you.
  Have a talk
If something or somebody is troubling you, don't quarrel with other people to relax yourself. It is a good idea to have a heart-to-heart talk with a friend or a family member. Tell them your feelings. A chat is a useful way to make you feel better.
  Have some hobbies
For example, playing pop music, drawing something or listening to your favorite music will make you smile. Act like an artist. Draw, paint or make something. Being active and creative makes you feel more satisfied and less nervous.
  Laugh more
Laughing is the best way to improve your moods. Children laugh about 400 times a day. Adults only laugh about 20 times a day. What happens? Experts say if we laugh more, we will be happier and healthier.
  Think positively
Close your eyes and imagine a beautiful scene or a time. Never think about anything terrible that you can't change. What's more, leave your flat and go outside. Sun and fresh air are good for you. Be a kid for a day. Play games, watch comedy movies or read jokes online.
