He invited me to meet his family (2)       we got to his house. As we walked to the front door, he stopped at a small tree and touched the branches (树枝) with both hands. As he opened the door, he had a surprising (3)      . He smiled and hugged his two small children and gave his wife a kiss.
Later, he walked me to my car. When we passed the tree, I asked him (4)       he touched the tree. "Oh, that's my trouble tree," he said, "I know I always have troubles on the job, but those troubles don't belong (属于) in the house with my wife and the children. So, I (5)       them up on the tree every night when I come home. Then, in the morning, I pick them up again."
"The funny thing is," he smiled, "when I come out in the morning to get those problems, there aren't nearly as many as I remember hanging up the night before."
13. A group of boys played around a tree. "What a tall tree!" they said to each other. "It would be (1)       to climb to the top!"

One of the climbers was an 8-year-old boy named David. He was the shortest child in the group. (3)       thought he would win the competition.
Then the game started. All of the boys tried their best to climb (4)       they could.
Although they all made it halfway up the tree (5)       David did, he reached the top of the tree fastest in the end.
His mother was (6)       to see this. She asked him, "David, how did you make it to reach the top of the tree so quickly?"
"It was easy", David said. "The other children kept (7)       as they climbed. When they realized how high they were, they got scared and (8)       falling down. (9)      , I looked only up. When I saw how close I was, I kept going higher and higher (10)       I reached the top."
It is true in life that if we just keep going forward without looking back, we are more likely to make our dream come true.
14. In recent years, the Earth has been getting warmer. Possibly this is natural, but probably we are causing it. People drive a lot of cars. This puts carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) into the air and helps to make the planet warmer. When we hear this news, we may smile. No one likes long, cold winters, but, unluckily, there are many bad points about a warmer Earth.
First, the ice at the Poles (两极) melts and becomes water. The result is that the sea level (海平面) becomes higher. Cities on the coast (海岸) will be in danger from the sea. Will Tokyo, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Shanghai become like parts of Holland, lower than the sea?
Possibly we will have to build walls to keep the water out. Typhoons (台风) will become even more dangerous.
Sadly, the second point is that storms will become bigger. Super typhoons will first appear in the Pacific and do great damage (损害) to East Asia. The same will happen to the Eastern United States. As the weather changes, some places that now have rain will become dry. The farmers will not be able to grow plants. Maybe some dry places will become wet—we don't know, but we will soon find out, and the change will cause many problems. There might be fights because of it.

16. You may know the saying: "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." A recent study by the Chinese University of Hong Kong has found another saying: "An apple a day keeps old age away."
The study used fruit flies (果蝇) , as they share many genes (基因) with humans. Scientists gave food to two groups of fruit flies.
Both groups got the same fruit, what's more, the second group also got apples, but the first did not. The results showed that most flies that ate apples could live 55 days longer than the flies that didn't eat apples. The study also found that apple-eating flies were more able to walk, climb and move about as they became old. The Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry reports. The scientists believe that the antioxidants (抗氧化剂) found in apples are good for health.
In another experiment (实验), scientists studied what thousands of women ate. They found that those women who often ate apples were 20 percent less likely to have a heart problem.
Scientists have recently found the apple's genetic code (基因序列). This allows scientists to make new kinds of fruit that are healthier. Scientists are already using this information to grow apples with added antioxidants. Antioxidants help to keep eyes and joints (关节) healthy and protect against heart problems and other illnesses.
Apples that help people get thinner may be in supermarkets in just four or five years. They are said to be "extra healthy" apples that can stop people from being fat.

We might love to tell others about our unusual experience. For example, we climbed Mount Everest, tasted some rare (罕见的) food or met a famous person on the street. But a new study shows that if we share these unusual experiences with others, it may bring something (1)             and not be welcomed.
We all like unusual experiences, and always can't wait to share them with our friends. Some people even mistakenly thought that having an unusual experience would make them the stars of the conversation. But they were (2)             wrong, because to be unusual means to be different from other people. If you do not share (3)             with the people around you, they will not welcome you in the conversation. What's more, conversations always seem (4)             well on more common topics.
To find out, the scientist Cooney and his group members had 68 people come to the lab (实验) in groups of four. In each group, one person was asked to watch a popular video of a street magician performing for some people, (5)             the other three people were asked watched a common cartoon video. After the group discussion, the people who watched the magician's performance felt (7)             than those who watched the cartoon video, because they felt (8)             out of their group discussion. They didn't have the same topic as others in the group.
The result shows that we should give more thoughts in (9)             what to talk about with others. If an experience turns you into someone who has nothing in common with others, (10)             experience it is, it won't make you happy.
24. "Please don't go to Wuhan unless it's really necessary," Zhong Nanshan, a famous respiratory (呼吸科) expert, said to people when COVID-19 hit Wuhan. (1)
Many Chinese know Zhong as the hero who beat SARS in 2003. (2)       He has given Chinese people confidence (信心) in beating the virus.
Zhong grew up in a family of doctors. (3)      . In 2003, when SARS hit China, he volunteered to treat sick people and asked other doctors to send their most serious cases (病例) to him. After months of hard work, China accepted his treatment plan for SARS and then the whole world, which saved thousands of lives.
Seventeen years later, Zhong is once again guiding an expert team to deal with the novel coronavirus. (4)       On Jan 18, he took a high-speed train from Guangzhou to Wuhan. Two days later, he became the first expert to tell the people that the virus can be spread (传播) between humans. On Jan 29, he and his team spent over four hours online checking five sick persons who were in serious condition. The next day, he chose a treatment plan for those patients. (5)
As People's Daily wrote, "The 84-year-old Zhong Nanshan shows his professionalism (专业性) and duty as a doctor."

A. His goal has always been to save as many lives as possible.
B. Facing the spread of COVID-19, everyone is afraid of the deadly illness.
C. But Zhong, 84, rushed (匆忙) on an overnight train to Wuhan to fight the illness.
D. People share his photos and words online, saying "they trust every word of Zhong".
E. Although this new virus is known to be more dangerous to old people, Zhong worries little about his own safety.
F. Under his guidance (指导), his team developed a rapid test kit (快速检测试剂盒) for the disease that can show results within 15 minutes.
25. Chinese people are very generous (大方的) about the education on their children. Some parents spend a lot and send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the United States or Australia. Many also want their children to take interest classes where they will either learn something like guitar, or other classes where the teachers will train them for better grades. Why do parents do this? These two kinds of classes will give them a head start in life. The Chinese believe that the more expensive the education is, the better their children will be. So parents hardly say no when they have to spend money on education. Even poor couples will buy a computer for their son or daughter.
However, what most parents don't see is that the best education their children can get is usually very cheap. Parents can see the importance of learning skills. Their children will usually be on good education in some areas while poor in others. What most parents never realize, is that today's children often don't feel confident (有信心的).
The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take tests and how to get high grades. They are not teaching them the most important skills. Children need to be confident, hard-working, happy and clever. Parents can realize this by teaching their children practical skills like cooking, washing and doing other housework.
Teaching a child to cook will improve many skills that he will need later in life. It's a must for children to take care of themselves. Cooking needs patience (耐心) and time. It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and finish his job well. The result, a well-cooked dinner, will give him much satisfaction and a lot of self-confidence.
An old machine, such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child as a toy may make him interested. If he spends hours looking at it, and trying to repair it, your child might become an engineer when he grows up. These activities are not only teaching a child to read a book, but also to think, to use his mind. This is much more important.

The writer's opinions —The best education is not (3)      the money that parents spend.
—Feelings, such as being confident, should be as important as learning skills.
The writer's advice —Parents should teach children some practical skills to develop their (4)
The (5)       of the activities —To make the children hard-working and confident.
