8.When You Are the "Lucky" One
I remember being really happy for my friend Avery when she won the championship, although I admit I was also a little bit envious (嫉妒的). When Avery and I tried out for Alice in Wonderland, however, things went the (1) way.
Avery really hoped to get picked to be Alice, but I didn't (2) what part I would get as long as I was in it. A few days later, we raced over to the theater office to see the cast list.
"That can't be right," Avery said. "There must be some mistake!"
But I really and truly was given the (3) of Alice. Avery got the role of the March Hare.
"Do you want to come over to (4) our lines?" I asked.
"You mean your lines?" Avery said, not even looking at me. "No, thanks. I'm pretty busy this week."
"OK," I said. "How about some day next week?"
"Sorry," she turned back. "I'm pretty sure I'm busy forever."
That night at dinner, my parents congratulated me for getting the lead role. "Well, I'm really confused," I said. "Avery was so (5) because I was picked to be Alice. She pretty much threw away our friendship."
"Hmm," said my mom, "sometimes when our friends do well, we feel envious and don't know how to (6) . She just needs a little time and understanding."
Over the next week, I did my best to give Avery some space. Then at rehearsal (排练) one day, I went up to her, "I know you didn't exactly love the idea of being the March Hare, but you're such a talented actor, and the way you say your lines is so awesome." I smiled.
"Thanks," said Avery.
"Well," I said, "I'm still struggling with a few things about my character. I'd love your help if you have any free time."
"I think I might be free on Thursday." She (7) .
Our play ended up going great. Even though things were tough for a little while with Avery and me, we're better than ever now! Avery even apologized (道歉) for the way she'd been acting at first.
People often have a hard time dealing with their feelings of envy and disappointment. If you happen to be the lucky one who's doing amazingly well, give your teammate a little time and (8) and he or she just might come around before too long. This might be the perfect time for you to be an extra-good friend.
