55.Nancy Visits the Lighthouse Nancy and her mother went to the beach (海滩) in Cape May, New Jersey (新泽西州), last summer. One day they went to see the lighthouse.
Nancy and her mother climbed to the top of the tower (塔).
From there they could see very far. It was beautiful.
Mr. Foreman, the man who works at the lighthouse, told Nancy and her mum all about it. The Cape May Lighthouse is over 130 years old. It is all white, and it is 165 feet (英尺) tall. It has a very strong light. Mr. Foreman said that the lighthouse is still very important to sailors (水手). Sailors can see its light from 24 miles (英里) out at sea. The light helps ships come into Delaware Bay (德拉华湾).
Mr. Foreman told Nancy and her mum how the sailors take care of the lighthouse. Their jobs are cleaning the light and making sure (确保) it is working. Mr. Foreman said that many people who live in Cape May also help keep the lighthouse good. They want others to enjoy it for many years to come. Some people help fix (修理) parts of the lighthouse. Some clean the lighthouse. Others paint it.
Nancy can't wait to visit the lighthouse again next summer. She wants Mr. Foreman to show the lighthouse to her best friend, Jose.
