3. In 1989, an 8.2 earthquake almost destroyed America, killing over 30,000 people in less than four minutes. A father left his wife safely at home and rushed to the school where his son was supposed to be, only to discover that the building was as flat as a pancake.
After the unforgettable scare, he remembered the promise he had made to his son, "No matter what happens, I'll always be there for you!" And tears began to fill his eyes. As he looked at the pile of ruins that once was the school, it looked hopeless but he kept remembering his promise to his son.
Remembering his son's classroom would be in the back right comer of the building, he rushed there and started digging through the ruins. As he was digging, other helpless parents tried to pull him off what was left of the school, saying, "It's too late! They're all dead! You can't help! Go home! Come on! Face reality. There's nothing you can do!"
To each parent he replied with one line, "Are you going to help me now?" And then he continued to dig for his son, stone by stone. The firefighter leader showed up and tried to pull him off the ruins, saying, "Fires are breaking out. Explosions are happening everywhere. You're in danger. We'll take care of it. Go home." This loving father asked, "Are you going to help me now?" The police came and said, "You're angry, worried and it's over. You are making others in danger. Go home. We'll handle it!" He replied, "Are you going to help me now?" No one helped.
He went on alone because he needed to know for himself, "Is my boy alive or is he dead?" He dug for eight hours ... 12 hours ... 24 hours ... 36 hours ... then, in the 38th hour, he pulled back a large stone and heard his son's voice. He screamed his son's name, "Armand!" He heard back, "Dad?! It's me, Dad! I told the other children not to worry. I told them that if you were alive, you would save me and when you saved me, they'd be saved. You promised, no matter what happens, you will always be there for me! You did it, Dad!" "What's going on there? How is it?" the father asked. "There are 14 of us left out of 33, Dad. We're scared, hungry, thirsty and thankful you're here. When the building fell down, it made a triangle, and it saved us."
"Come out, boy!" "No, Dad! Let the other kids out first because I know you'll get me! No matter what happens, I know you'll always be there for me!"
4. Wind power is a very clean source of energy. This is how wind power works. Wind makes windmills spin(旋转). When the windmills spin, they make electricity. Then we can use the electricity.
A lot of people think that wind power is new, but that's not true. For many years, people have used wind to sail boats and move water. We still do those things today, but these days we mostly use wind power to make electricity.
Wind power is a very popular source of energy. Most people think that we should use it more and more. First of all, it's clean. Windmills don't pollute the environment at all. Second, we can use wind power forever. After all, we will always have wind. Also, wind power is cheap, and it's getting even cheaper.
A lot of people don't understand wind power very well. They believe that there are problems with wind power, but many of those problems are not real. For example, some people say that windmills are dangerous for birds. It used to be true, but it isn't true any more. Old windmills killed birds because they spun very fast. New windmills spin slowly, and they aren't dangerous for birds.
However, there are real problems with windmills. One problem is that many people think windmills are very ugly. This is a problem for people, because windmills are often in very pretty areas. Also, wind doesn't blow all the time, so we can't use wind power all the time. Finally, windmills are noisy.
Wind power is becoming more and more common. Right now more than 80 countries use wind power. About 2.5 percent of the world's power comes from the wind. For some countries, that number is a lot higher. Wind power gives Denmark more than 25 percent of its electricity.
5. Pearl S. Buck was the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. She wrote more than one hundred books. But most people remember Pearl S. Buck for her novels about China. She knew the country and its people very well. For nearly forty years, China was her home.
Pearl's parents were Caroline and Absalom Sydenstricker. They were religious workers in China. In 1892, they were visiting the United States when Pearl was born in Hillsboro, West Virginia. Three months after her birth, the family left the United States and moved back to China.
Pearl and her family lived among Chinese people. Pearl's education began at home. Her mother taught her many of the things she would have learned in an American school. A Chinese tutor taught Pearl other subjects including the writings of the famous thinker Confucius, Chinese reading, writing and history. When she was seven, she began reading the works of British writer Charles Dickens. Many years later, after she had become a famous author, she said that Dickens' writing style had the greatest influence on her own style.
Her first novel was East Wind, West Wind. It tells the story of a Chinese girl who learns about the western world. But it was Pearl S. Buck's next book — The Good Earth that made her famous and brought her the money she needed. And it became the best-selling book in the United States in 1931 and 1932. Pearl S. Buck won the Pulitzer Prize. The next year, Pearl S. Buck was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
After almost forty years in China, the writer moved back to the United States. Pearl S. Buck gave many speeches in America. She talked to young people about the importance of a good education. She told them they needed to know more about other people around the world.
