Animals are important in Indian culture and are treated in a special way. For example, a lot of elephants aren't (1)      . they are domesticated(驯养). They aren't kept as pets, but as working animals. Every working elephant (2)       its own keeper. An elephant and its keep meet for the first time when they are both young, and they grow up together. In fact, their relationship continues for the rest of the elephant's (3)      perhaps 40 years. Lots of elephants work in the forest, moving heavy (4)       when they are cut down. Some give rides to tourists, or (5)       people during celebrations and festivals. Keepers take excellent care of their elephants , feeding them (6)       and giving them a bath at the end of the working day.

11.Do you sleep well?If your answer is no, the following might help you.
Set a certain bedtime and rising time
A certain bedtime and rising time can help you build up your body clocks. Set a bedtime which is good and natural for you. Don't change your bedtime and rising time on weekends.
Avoid exciting activities just before sleeping
Exciting activities get your thoughts running. At the same time, if you make tomorrow's plan or read an exciting story before turning off the light, it doesn't give you enough time to relax before you try to sleep.
Keep the bedroom for sleeping only
It's a bad habit for you to use your bedroom as a place to eat, watch TV, read, talk on the phone, or discuss important matters with your family members. Break that habit to get better sleep.
Don't go to bed too early
Your body usually lets you sleep only the number of hours it needs. You should decide how many hours you must sleep in order not to experience daytime sleepiness.
Take a warm shower before your bedtime
A twenty﹣minute warm shower at a temperature of about 45 –50 not only is a great relax at day's end, but also raises your body temperature by several degrees. The coming drop in temperature of your body will naturally make you feel sleepy.
12.Bags of Love
Last year, I worked in a middle school near my mother's house, and I stayed with her for a month. During that time, I helped her do some housework and buy some food.
After the first week, I noticed that the food was eaten up very quickly. Then I began keeping an eye on my mum. To my surprise, I found that she would put some of the food into a paper bag and go out with it at about nine every morning. And finally, I decided to follow her. I saw her taking the food to the street children. She would also spend a lot of time talking and playing with them.
One day, I talked to a neighbour and found out that my mum was well﹣known in the area. The children were very friendly with her and even thought of her as their own mother. Then it hit me ﹣﹣ why wouldn't she want to tell me about it?Was she worried that I would stop buying food if I found out?
When my mum got home, I gave her a big hug (拥抱). I told her she didn't need to keep it a secret from me. And she told me something about the children. Some of them lived with an old lady in a small house. Others slept on the street. For years, she was helping the poor street children by giving them food. After she told me everything, I was so moved by how selfless (无私的) she was. She helped others in need. As her son, I was so proud of my mum.
I continued to buy food for my mum after that. But I always added one more bag for her other children.
13. Are you shy?If you are, you are not alone. In fact, close to 50 percent of people are shy. Almost 80 percent of people feel shy at some point in their lives. These days, shyness is becoming more and more common. Now, scientists are trying to understand shyness. They have some interesting ideas about why people are shy.
Is it possible to be born shy? Many scientists say yes. They say 15 to 20 percent of babies behave shyly. These babies are a little quieter and more watchful than other babies. Interestingly, these shy babies usually have shy parents. As a result, scientists think that some shyness is genetic.
Family size might cause people to be shy as well. Scientists at Harvard University studied shy children. They found that 66 percent of them had older brothers and sisters. As a result, they became shy. At the same time, children with no brothers and sisters may be shy as well. Growing up alone, they often play by themselves. They are not able to learn the same social skills as children from big families.
You may also be shy because of where you were born. When scientists studied shyness in different countries. They found surprising differences. In Japan, most people said they were shy. But in Israel, only one of three people said so. What explains the difference? One scientist says the Japanese and Israelis have different opinions of failure. In Japan, when people do not succeed, they feel bad about themselves. They blame(责备)themselves for their failure. In Israel, the opposite is true. Israelis often blame failure on outside reasons, such as family, teachers, friends, or bad luck. In Israel, freedom of opinion and risk taking are strongly supported. This may be why Israelis worry less about failure and are less shy.
For shy people, it can be difficult to make friends, speak in class, and even get a good job. But scientists say you can get over your shyness. They suggest trying new things and practicing conversation. And don't forget﹣﹣﹣if you are shy, you are not the only one.
14. Research says that husbands do not do their fair share of work around the house. A study from an American university says that men seldom do the same share of housework. Researchers interviewed 182 working couples who became first﹣time parents. Both husbands and wives worked almost the same number of hours in full﹣time jobs. However, men did five hours a week less housework than women after their baby was born.
It is a different story for mothers. Becoming a parent added 21 hours a week to a mother's work. Most of this was looking after her baby. New fathers did not do more work because they did not realize the mother was doing so much more. Another reason is that after a baby is born, fathers follow the "traditional" roles. That is, the mother looks after the baby and the father works outside. This happens even when the mother is working the same number of hours in her job.
15. The first part of a new science﹣fiction series (系列剧)was shown on NBC last night. Star Trek is about a spacecraft(宇宙飞船)which travels faster than the speed of light. The show is developed from three ideas about the 22nd century. First, we'll find other life forms great tools which will make amazing things possible.
Let's think about these predictions. If we find life forms on other planets, will they be intelligent?I hope so. But we human beings might not be friendly ﹣﹣ I don't think we'll believe in the idea of peace one hundred years from now. But this is science fiction, so we can be optimistic! And Star Trek's idea of life in the future is 'communicators'. And we will be able to have conversations with people who are on because you'll have an electronic notebook. And if you get ill, the doctor won't have to examine you ﹣﹣ a machine will 'read' your body. The strangest machine includes a 'teleport' which will take people to a different place in a second!
The ideas are interesting, and in my opinion there's only one problem with star trek:the acting. The TV company (公司)will have to get better actors. If they do that, the show might be a success. If the acting doesn't improve, Star Trek won't last for more than one series. Of course, my prediction may be wrong. I can't see into the future!
