6.Being brave on a bus
When Will Restall was in fifth grade, he received bus safety training at school. Local bus drivers taught students about the buses' two-way radios and showed the students how to use them in dangerous situation. What is a two-way radio? A two-way radio is a radio that can both send and receive messages. It can help small groups of people stay in touch with each other. Will used what he learned to help an injury (受伤的) bus driver get quick medical treatment. People in his hometown now call the 11-year-old a hero for his brave actions.
Will was taking the bus to school one morning. Like every other students on the bus, Will was playing a video game on his phone. He had to wait 10 minutes or so before he could get off the bus.
But then he heard a loud noise and looked up to see what happened. He saw that the bus driver was no longer in the driver's seat. She had passed out (昏倒) and slumped over on the bus' stairs.
Will left his seat, took the two way radio and reported that the driver was hurt. The radios on each bus let Will's friends hear him report the accident. Soon, another bus driver and an ambulance (救护车) arrived to help.
When they got there, the bus driver was awake and sitting up, but not speaking. They sent the driver to the hospital. Will and everyone else on the bus went to class as usual.
Will's brave actions attracted a lot of attention. A local TV station even interviewed him, although he didn't want to be in the spotlight.
7. As a teen, we're likely to share almost everything with a friend. One big step of our growth is making the important decision to help our friends and promise to care for each other. However, we also need to learn what it means to help friends and how to help them.
The first step towards helping others is to identify (确认) that they need help. It's important to learn how to identify when to help them. Perhaps they don't feel like going out as much or, when they do, their mind seems somewhere else. There are other signs (迹象) that you can also notice. For example, friends are not acting as usual. It may seem like they are always worried. Maybe they are taking more risks than usual and seem to get angry easily or to be negative (消极的) about life. It's important to pay attention to friends and to be prepared to act when you've noticed signs that all may not be well.
The next step towards helping others is to listen. As young people, when we begin to communicate more with others, we begin to develop the skills that help us notice signs that our friend is or isn't doing well emotionally (情绪上地). When listening, we can move our bodies to face the friend we are listening to, look him straight in the eye, and put down our phones! In this way, the friend who is talking can feel your respect and your support. Once you get to know their problems, you can directly give some advice.
It is always good to encourage a friend to get help. If they are not ready to follow your advice, the best thing to do is to share your concerns (担忧) with someone you trust, like a member of their family, another friend, or a teacher at school.
You might feel bad about going behind a friend's back to talk about their problems, and you might worry that you'll end a friendship. Try to remember that if your heart tells you that your friend needs help, this is not the time to keep secrets.
8. We all live in a fast-paced, technology-packed world, where we spend most of our time indoors studying, watching TV, playing computer games or using social media. But do you remember those happy hours spent outdoors after school, when you ran, laughed out loud and played fun games with your friends?
In the US, June is known as Great Outdoors Month. It hopes to get more kids outside to have active fun once again. Former US President Barack Obama wrote in a document declaring the day in 2012, "Whether camping, fishing, or playing in a neighborhood park, nature gives each of us the chance to get active, explore, and strengthen our relationships with family and friends."
Breathing fresh air and taking part in outdoor activities with family and friends is always a great experience. "It all adds up to your enjoyment," the US Union Creek Resort website noted. "We all know how fast life can be, so it's never too late to create happy memories that we will cherish and share forever."
Apart from making us feel happy, outdoor activities also benefit our health. Science agrees that outdoor activities can reduce stress too. "Fresh air and sunlight have the largest benefits," Susanne Preston, a mental health advisor at South University, US, wrote. When we are exposed to natural sunlight, the vitamin D in their skin helps to make us feel relaxed.
What could be a better way to enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors? You can go for a walk or run. This is one of the simplest ways to get outside and enjoy nature. Go for a walk or a run in your neighborhood or on a nearby nature trail. Make sure you take in the nature you pass — trees, plants, and animals. If walking or running isn't quite your style, go for a bike ride instead. There are also a lot of places where you can hike. You' ll be out in nature, with your family members or friends. It's also a great way to enjoy different kinds of plants and animals.
Leaving your tech behind may seem difficult, but if you lose yourself in nature, you' ll probably forget all about it. Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.
9. We're now used to wearing masks in public. Masks, as a simple protective tool, have been used by people for a long time. When was the protective mask first invented and how did it develop?Let's take a look.
  1st century
At this time, lots of people in the Roman Empire worked underground in mines. Many died of lung diseases caused by dust. Pliny the Elder (23 — 79), a Roman philosopher, used animal bladders (膀胱) to protect miners from the dust. So people called Pliny the first person to start using the masks.
  16th century
Many centuries later, Italian artist and inventor Leonardo Da Vinci (1452 — 1519) advised people to wear a woven (纺织的) cloth over their faces to protect against harmful chemicals.
  19th century
In 1848, American Lewis Hassley became the first person to patent a protective mask for miners. In 1897, Polish-Austrian doctor Johann designed a simple mask. He advised the doctors to wear it to prevent infection. This was the first use of a surgical (外科的) mask.
20th century In 1910, the pneumonic plague (肺鼠疫) broke out in Northeast China and killed many people. Chinese doctor Wu Liande designed a face mask called
"Wu's mask". In 1911, the mask became very popular around the word because it could be made easily and cheaply.
  Today
Because of the heavy air pollution, Britons had to wear "smog masks". As developed countries cleaned up their pollution, smog and smog masks moved to developing countries. Mask models such as N 95 and KN 90 became highly popular.
As we can see, masks have been helping mankind for centuries. Wearing medical masks is widely believed to be an easy but useful method to protect oneself from different kinds of harmful things.
